Ralph, you’re way off on this one. Great flick, pure and simple. Entertaining from start to finish, end of story.

  2. Ralph on October 22nd, 2006 2:31 pm

That’s why I love this site. Everyone can get a second opinion.

  3. Ralph on December 30th, 2006 12:05 pm

Steve Austin was NOT a drunk! He was a womanizing superhero and my idol. And you missed out on a great collection of toys from that line; Maskatron, the Bionic Transport and Repair Station, the Critical Assignment legs and arms and Oscar Goldman had some hip clothes that Mayor Vaughn would be proud of.

  4. MYNUTS on January 2nd, 2007 3:50 pm

    Gregory raped me.

  5. Doug on January 2nd, 2007 10:05 pm

Great stuff! never saw the Gre-gory one before!

But ahh yes I think i had a bionic man and a Fonzie, who used to ride Evel Kneivels motorcycle!

    More toys please!

    ALIEN!

  6. chris on January 3rd, 2007 5:00 pm

I wish I had a big Alien and Bionic Bigfoot figure. The adventures they would have…

  7. Chris on January 5th, 2007 3:11 pm

Gregory raped you?? Impossible I say.

  8. Chris on January 19th, 2007 2:42 pm

A vampire bat toy cannot rape. Hugo can though. He is pure evil.

  9. Alannah on January 22nd, 2007 12:00 pm

You know when I was little my brothers really enjoyed scaring the bejesus out of me w/ that Hugo doll. Yeah that’s right I called him a doll, whatcha gonna do about it! I still find him quite frightening even to this day.

I’m going to have to agree with MYNUTS (what a weird thing to say to begin with, let alone the fact that I’m not a guy!) I’ve seen that cat, um, I mean bat in action. He’s evil…maybe not pure evil like Hugo, but evil all the same.

  10. Zaius on February 3rd, 2007 6:13 pm

To hell with Hugo and the bat. Planet of the Apes! That’s where its at! That Zira doll was hot. It brought out strange, tingly feelings when I was a wee tot…

This was my favorite (non-Bigfoot) book growing up. Thanks you so much for reminding me of it! Off to eBay now…

  12. Steve on April 8th, 2007 9:04 am

Wow, crazy – I just found a copy of the Movie Monsters book on Ebay – I used to own it (bought it from Scholastic, through our school’s book program) and I haven’t seen it in years – I need to own it again. I didn’t realize it was written by Alan Ormsby, director of Popcorn – that’s great. I remember those illustrations very well – he’s really a talented guy.

And wow – Castle Dracula Colorforms is on this page too. I recently found that and had it framed for my office – it’s in the first picture here:

You have quite nice and nicely displayed collection of goodies. I wish I was that organized…

  14. Steve on April 10th, 2007 10:14 pm

Thanks, Chris – it took awhile to organize it like that, and now it’s about filled up, but I’m happy with it. Glad you appreciate it – it’s a fun room to work in for sure.

It sounds like a Sex in the City Slasher flick, could be interesting.

Dawn of the Dead remake? FUCK IT!!

  28. Sasser on May 2nd, 2007 4:39 pm

It really is a shame we can’t look at Star Wars with a pure eye any longer. It’s been too long. Hell, Jedi started the downward sprial for me…

But I do think for the 30th anniversary we should all try to get back in touch with what SW was all about before it became retitled as Episode Four…

So I propose that on May 25th, we all have a drink, say “May the Force be with you” and bullseye a couple of Womp Rats…

  29. Ralph James Ippoliti on May 2nd, 2007 6:32 pm

Sasser! Settle down… we all know how you feel about the remake. But Doug and I both like Slither, you should at least give it a try.

  30. Ralph James Ippoliti on May 2nd, 2007 6:34 pm

I second that motion and at that after we have a drink on May 25th and say “May The Force Be With You” and bullseye Womp Rats like back home we go and see how a trilogy should end and see Pirates 3.

  31. Sasser on May 3rd, 2007 1:26 pm

Actually, Star Wars will hardly be on my mind at all that day…it will be PIRATES 3, PIRATES 3, and if time permits, MORE PIRATES 3!!!

  32. cummins on May 3rd, 2007 10:11 pm

Choke is my favorite Palahniuk book, and the film sounds promising. This, along with Survivor, is perhaps Chuck’s most cinematic book, so I have high hopes. As for Rockwell, it’s inspired casting. He’s an interesting actor who is consistently engaging, even in drek like the Hitchhiker’s Guide film.

  33. cummins on May 3rd, 2007 10:12 pm

    Wallopin websnappers! These are amazing.

  34. Doug on May 3rd, 2007 10:49 pm

  36. Doug on May 5th, 2007 10:42 am

Now i have to go dig out the DVD set…heh

  38. Ralph James Ippoliti on May 8th, 2007 10:12 pm

    That sounds very intense.

  39. Sasser on May 9th, 2007 10:56 pm

Indeed, it does sound intense. However, how about a little background info on the film? How did you come to hear of it? Where did you see it? Where is this filmmaker based?

  40. Kristin on May 10th, 2007 11:31 pm

    they are pretty damn cool….

  41. Sasser on May 11th, 2007 2:55 pm

Well, ain’t you so sweet you make sugar taste just like salt!

  42. CP007 on May 15th, 2007 2:13 am

Ironically, there was a “test screening” of this film tonight (May 14th) at The College of Lake County in Grayslake, Illinois. I popped online to see if anyone else had posted any public reviews before chiming in myself.

“5-25-77″ is a film that had so much potential in the early days of development.

It was a great script based on the fascinating true-life story of the writer-director himself, and had the potential to be a film that would bond movie-fans and movie-makers alike. What became of “5-25-77″ is a production that led to agony, heartbreak, and irritation for many involved. If you search around the internet, you can find many postings from “PRJ” (the director) himself, often popping up on random blogs (such as this one), along with IMDB, AICN, and countless others with a trail of outdated info and promises made and broken over the course of the past 7 or 8 years.

A teaser trailer was filmed in 2002, featuring locals along with then-attached cast. Filming on the actual film began in late 2004, followed by more shooting in the spring of 2006, and yet more pick-ups being shot in January of 2007.

The much-touted appearances by Christopher Lloyd, Carrie Fisher, Joe Pantoliano, etc. never happened, with Colleen Camp and Austin Pendlton (both great actors) stepping into those roles. If I remember correctly, the part of “Herb Lightman” was originally set to be played by Bob Balaban, and changed actors at least twice before Austin came on board.

Much of the crew worked for little-or nothing, often being strong-armed into doing tasks well above and beyond their job descriptions, all while being treated fairly bad at the same time. “5-25″ had fallen victim to poor scheduling and mismanagement on so many levels.

Unfortunately, all of that shows, and the version of the film screened tonight for a couple hundred people in Illinois is a bloated, self-serving, ego-driven vanity piece. Clocking in at over 2-hours in length, the Director claims there will be a screening of the completed, less bloated cut at Star Wars Celebration in two weeks, followed by a screening in Austin in early June. How they’ll be able to pull it off remains to be seen, but yet I still hope it can be done, and somehow they find a way to salvage what could’ve been a great film. As it stands now, a few great performances by the very young cast are overshadowed and surrounded by a very mediocre movie. It’s disappointing to know what could’ve been, what might’ve been, if only it was done right and in a timely fashion. There’s an entire audience that’s been waiting for this for years, and to let them down would be a crime.

  51. The Angry Princess on May 29th, 2007 12:40 pm

soooo true! I hated Hostel, let me know your thoughts when you see the 2nd..

  52. Ralph James Ippoliti on May 31st, 2007 9:50 am

My first issue is… “Captain Chris Sasser??” – They are just GIVING this title away any more.

Second, why doesn’t Captain Ron count? I like Captain Ron.

The other choices are ok, I’m not a huge Lance fan, though that convention story with the baby and the dolphin is very funny. But Lance in Millenium and Vampires was not for me.

I’m surprised Trejo hasn’t been in one already.

As for women… I know you won’t agree but I think Angelina Jolie is on a lot of lists, but she’s the most obvious and I think ultimately she’d be a poor choice.

How about my favorite girl, Sarah Michelle Gellar? Buffy on the High Seas.

Pam Grier was really strong in Jackie Brown and I can see her being a tough pirate.

Selma Hayek would be amazing as a pirate.

Maybe Hilary Swank since she has that tomboy thing going on.

I’d like to see Nathan Fillion as a Pirate, probably not a bad guy but someone who works with Jack.

Why not put some historical pirates in it, like Blackbeard or Captain Kidd.

  53. Sasser on May 31st, 2007 2:21 pm

Um…you don’t care for Lance in Near Dark but you want to see that no-talent Buffy bitch as a female pirate?? Has the whole world gone crazy?? My buddies did not die face down in the muck so that Buffy could prance around as a faux pirate….!!

  54. Ralph James Ippoliti on May 31st, 2007 3:24 pm

Buffy Bitch? Thems fighten’ words. Lance was good in Near Dark, I’ll give you that. He just phones everything in. It’s Lance playing Lance.

Sarah, however, look at her range or work! SIMPLY IRRESITIBLE, come on – that’s acting. And she IS Daphne.

Where’s Doug when I need him?

  55. Sasser on May 31st, 2007 10:59 pm

Lance playing Lance?? Perhaps you are not aware of Mr. Henriksen’s deep and complicated process called “The Gathering” in which he delves into the very being of his character. And I hope he isn’t reading this…or he may come and kill you personally.

But enough of this. This was meant for fun. This was meant for readers to respond with Pirate Casting Goodness. There ARE readers out there…right?

  56. Sheryl Abbott on June 4th, 2007 10:42 am

When can I see this movie again in the theatres? I saw it at a screening in Los Angeles at the Fine Arts theatre, and thought it was well acted, written, and all in all a very good film. Just as good, if not better than most of the studio films they’re putting out there. I too enjoyed Knopf’s performance, and thought Miss Edie Dearing was adorable as the masseuse along with her slimey boyfriend “Bobo.”
Kudos to the casting person, and Miss Orcutt for putting together such an enjoyable ride.

  57. The Angry Princess on June 4th, 2007 9:36 pm

I loved this movie! The Host had me laughing one minute then deeply engrossed at another!

  58. Ralph James Ippoliti on June 4th, 2007 10:18 pm

I agree, there were some great moments and some really funny ones as well. I think I’ll have to watch it again because there were a few things I had problems with that are escaping me right now.

  59. Ralph James Ippoliti on June 4th, 2007 10:22 pm

Full on hardcore porn! Now you’re talking. It sounds a little like “Sid & Nancy” with a shot of “Trainspotting.” I grew up next to the cemetery that Nancy was buried in. I was told by the owners that it was a memorable and freaky funeral.

  60. doug on June 5th, 2007 12:00 pm

um, I dont watch Buffy. And I agree with Chirs, Ahem,”Captain Chris”. I havent seen proogf of Buffy’s acting chops just yet.

And Lance Henrikson rules. In Evrything.(sorry ralph)

We need more Lee Marvin’s tho. And more Robert Shaws. Thee kids today dont know what real men are. Heh.

    WWLMD?

    “What would Lee Marvin do?”

theres a new T shirt i dea for you Ralph. Lets work on that. ;-)

sorry about the typos. at work, going too fast.

  62. Sasser on June 5th, 2007 1:50 pm

Doug, you’re a good man. You can sail aboard my ship, mate.

But seriously, you’re absolutely right when you mention the likes of Robert Shaw and Lee Marvin. Hell, there aren’t even any Ernie Borgnines these days. Who, come to think of it, would have made a swell pirate!

  63. Sasser on June 5th, 2007 1:51 pm

I really enjoyed The Host as well…though I did find it to be a bit uneven. Overall, it was fun though.

  64. Ralph James Ippoliti on June 5th, 2007 2:48 pm

Borgnine was really a pirate when he played the role of Commander Quinton McHale in “McHale’s Navy.” The deleted scenes show McHale raping and pillaging every port they stopped at. That’s a little known fact.

  65. Sasser on June 5th, 2007 3:41 pm

I knew this would turn into a McHale’s Navy thread…I just bloody knew it…

  66. Ralph James Ippoliti on June 6th, 2007 10:14 pm

  68. Frances on June 7th, 2007 10:06 pm

Kudos on your Pilot! I agree…they’re doing a 4th Indiana…why? Yeah Sean C. for the good decision. I agree with Ralph regarding the well-received and easily identifiable comparison of the characters portrayed by Harrison Ford and Johnny Depp. Anyway…good harmony between the 2 of you and fun to listen to you guys!

  69. Sasser on June 8th, 2007 12:30 pm

Alas, you did not dream that…Bruce Campbell and TOM ARNOLD…

  70. The Angry Princess on June 8th, 2007 11:09 pm

    very cool cast guys!:)

  71. Ralph James Ippoliti on June 9th, 2007 10:17 pm

Well, considering he is nodding to the cult classic movie, “I Spit On Your Grave” which has one of the most brutal rape scenes ever put on film and is also known for the violent revenge the victim takes on her attackers, he would have to top it with even more disturbing shit. I wonder how it compares…

  72. The Angry Princess on June 9th, 2007 11:14 pm

you need to watch it and let me know your opinion. I am not into this types of flicks but am reviewing them for different sites. I was really blown away by it. I didn’t even know what exploitation movies were until a few years ago. And these few are my firsts and I know for a fact that I will never watch these movies for pleasure they are to crazy for me!

  73. Ralph James Ippoliti on June 11th, 2007 1:17 pm

Ha! I was going to suggest that you have been desensitized. You need to go watch a fluffy bunny movie to bring you back.

On a side note, there was an episode of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” that was similar (I can hear Chris now sighing in disgust – he claims that I say Buffy did everything – which in the 7 seasons it was on, they did a lot.) Anyway, in the Buffy episode a cult group acting like a shelter for runaway teens used the teens they took in for some sort of slave labor in Hell. It was pretty cool.

  74. The Angry Princess on June 11th, 2007 8:16 pm

I got my shirt today thanks! You know what’s funny I also received Cyn today to review! lol

  75. Ralph James Ippoliti on June 11th, 2007 10:04 pm

I’d be interested in hearing your opinion of “Cyn” to see if we had similar thoughts.

  76. The Angry Princess on June 11th, 2007 10:52 pm

    It blew me away…:)

  77. The Angry Princess on June 14th, 2007 1:49 pm

It starts with a desperate looking woman tied up held hostage by two men as they chat about how she is the bait that will bring forth who they are really after. You get the feeling that this desperate girl is fucked as she sits their waiting her demise with lips quivering in fear.

Alex Ferrari’s “Cyn” was amazing to watch and considering it is only 5 minutes long, it is jam-packed with everything you could ever ask for, even having characters that seem already at home with the viewers. As Otto and Jesse wait patiently “Cyn” suddenly turns the tables on them by out smarting the one and then she wipes up the floor with the other guy effortlessly.

I love seeing strong female characters kicking ass…it shows that not all women are these frail little creatures that need looking after like a toddler with a fork around the powert outlets. So much action is packed in this short your head will spin in delight.

I know everyone that see’s this will be vying for a full length feature, his email will be overflowing with praise from new adoring fans (like myself) begging and pleading for more of “Cyn.” It seemed like Daddy was the one watching from a video monitor as Cyn dealt with her situation quite nicely.

As Cyn and Daddy walk off together their conversation hints at hopefully another episode of this twisted team- a modern day Bonnie and Clyde if you will. If you have the chance check it out- do it! It only takes up 5 minutes of your time and I guarantee you’ll be left wondering what kind of havoc this devilish pair could create!

Oh, you are breaking my heart by not watching Black & White films and Foreign Films. You really need to do something about that! Here are 2 foreign films you should rent – if you have Netflix go now and put them on your list and let me know what you think about them.

    1.) Man Bites Dog

A satirical look at how the media affects and promotes violence in modern society. Spoofing reality television, a fascinated documentary crew follows a charismatic yet unrepentant serial killer on his murder sprees. The crew attempts to objectively document the horror, but as the violence escalates, they ultimately get sucked into participating. Man Bites Dog won the International Critics’ Prize at the 1992 Cannes Film Festival.

2.) Baxter (should have a dog on the cover.)

A bull terrier named Baxter rids himself of one owner after another in a search for the perfect master in this dark comedy told from the dog’s perspective. When the canine meets a young neo-Nazi, Baxter gains a license to vent his growing rage. Empowered by his alienated new owner, Baxter turns into a vicious killer. French director Jérôme Boivin’s chilling satire stars Lise Delamare, Jean Mercure and Jacques Spiesser.

Both are subtitled but you can deal. I won’t even begin to start with the B&W just yet.

  86. me on July 30th, 2007 9:03 am

Chris Marker’s “La Jetee” (the short that inspired “12 Monkeys”) is unmissable as well. Even though it is black and white…and subtitled.

  87. Ralph James on August 6th, 2007 7:14 am

I just put “Dawn” on my netflix. You can just divide my $19 netflix fee by 3 and send me that as my refund if I don’t like it. :P

Uh-oh – I’m a townie! Thankfully though, not by your definition – no Hep or HIV here. But when I lived in Doylestown, we called ourselves townies. I thought it was a good term. Now I’m back to living in another town and back to being a townie. I think in NJ Townies aka Dirty Parkers (Where the hell does Dirty Parkers come from?) has a different meaning – here, we just call them white trash.

Just wanted to add that Shane Ryan won Best Music Video for “Fallen” and also had an official selection for Best Drama for “Isolation” in the 2003 Philadelphia Video Festival – the predecessor of This Is Some Scene’s next major festival – GUERILLADELPHIA. I have seen almost everything that Shane has done – he is quite the prolific filmmaker and a great guy.

I don’t see any problem with Mike’s behavior. And porn — not like a car accident. I want to look – but if you are talking about the combo of porn and horror, which this film seems to entail, then maybe I don’t want to see it. I don’t think there is anything that could upset me. Maybe I’ll check this out. Either way, you get kudos for using the word “titilate.”

  97. The Angry Princess on August 16th, 2007 12:09 am

I have no problem with porn, unless my man is constantly whacking off and not giving me any ass. The porn is not the car wroeck the bloody vibrator was! yuck!

    SWEET

  101. Sasser on August 17th, 2007 9:35 am

The DVD sounds like a massive disappointment. As a key film of the 1980’s, Poltergeist deserves AN IN-DEPTH retrospective. Thanks for nothing MGM.

  102. doug on August 17th, 2007 10:27 am

I agree it is a MAJOR disappointment. Altho the new transfer with Anamorphic pic, makes it worth picking up. Though I cant figure out why no real documentary? Its been so long , why not just address the issue of who directed what? Why hide? what has anyone got to lose? It would make for great fodder on a DVD like this…
Maybe some fanboys will step in like the JAWS doc or the Psycho and Werewolf in london docs that are being made independently.

  103. Ralph James on August 17th, 2007 12:55 pm

I’m still going to buy it. Who’s the more foolish, the fool studio or the fool who buys from the studio – that’s what Obi-Wan would say if he was alive and real and living in today’s world completely unaware of the Star Wars universe…

I think the E True Hollywood Story of Poltergeist will probably be better than whatever doc they have on here – who wants ghosthunters?

    GRRR. ARRGGHH!

  104. Ralph James on August 18th, 2007 8:35 am

I got my copy in the mail yesterday. Going to watch it soon.

  105. Sasser on August 18th, 2007 3:43 pm

I don’t think MGM is to blame on this…they usually do really nice special editions (the recently released Invasion of the Body Snatchers comes to mind).

I think we can shift the blame to good ‘ol Mr. Spielberg. He was interested in directing Poltergeist himself…but E.T. came up and he called on Tobe Hooper.

Insiders claim that once Poltergeist started coming together so well and it was clear it was going to be successful the producers of the film (Frank Marshall, Steven Spielberg) began actively campaigning Spielberg’s talents surrounding the film. His name is larger on the poster, he is featured in a press-kit still (Tobe isn’t) and Tobe is all but cut from a making of documentry.

This all led to a lot of bad publicity for Tobe Hooper at the time. Spielberg on the otherhand, had a double-header of hits to his credit that summer. He DID issue a full page apology in Variety to Tobe Hooper later on…but the damage was already done. Then Hooper sealed his doom by working with Cannon Films…

  106. Ralph James on August 18th, 2007 3:57 pm

Maybe Speilberg and Shia are related – just look at these photos…

  107. The Angry Princess on August 18th, 2007 4:47 pm

Poltergeist was always one of my favorite movies. I remember watching the documentart on tv and they talked of the bad luck and string of deaths of the characters and all. It was interesting, but I wish there were more extras with it.

  108. Ralph James on August 18th, 2007 4:50 pm

Just some of the reason’s there is a suspected Poltergeist Curse…

In Poltergeist’s case, those associated with the film who died prematurely include:
Dominique Dunne, 22-year-old actress who played the oldest sister Dana in the first movie, died after being choked by a jealous boyfriend in 1982. The boyfriend was later convicted and sentenced to six years in prison.

Heather O’Rourke, 12-year-old actress who played Carol Anne in the three Poltergeist movies, died in 1988 after what doctors initially described as an acute form of influenza but later changed to septic shock after bacterial toxins invaded her bloodstream.

Julian Beck, 60-year-old who played Kane in Poltergeist II: The Other Side, died of stomach cancer, with which he was diagnosed before he had accepted the role.

Will Sampson, 53 years old, who played Taylor the Medicine Man in Poltergeist II, died of post-operative kidney failure and pre-operative malnutrition problems.

  109. Sasser on August 19th, 2007 11:46 am

Poltergeist curse? Balderdash. Just like the Amityville Horror was real…

  110. Ralph James on August 19th, 2007 12:02 pm

You mean the Amityville Horror was a hoax? Oh, dear, and they seemed like good Christian folk.

But a midget really did hang himself on the set of “The Wizard of Oz.”

Balderdash is a fun board game – I have Beyond Balderdash, which is even better. We have to get a group over to the new apartment and play that game.

  111. Sasser on August 19th, 2007 1:41 pm

And don’t forget…The Exorcist set was cursed as well…and they used a trained shark in JAWS!

  112. The Angry Princess on August 19th, 2007 7:44 pm

I think the Exorcist vomited on you…

  113. Sasser on August 20th, 2007 10:18 am

Vomited on me? I have no idea what that means. But I warn you, Pazuzu and I go WAY back, sister…

  114. Ralph James on August 20th, 2007 10:27 am

HAHAHA! You guys are making me LOL at work – not fair – Chris, I was going to say the same thing, “I don’t know what that means.” HA, you got vomited on – you can ask her at Monster Mania. Meanwhile, I keep thinking of this wonderful quote…

I’ve never seen that. I’ve never seen anybody drive their garbage down to the street and bang the hell out of it with a stick. I-I’ve never seen that.

  115. Sasser on August 20th, 2007 10:34 am

  117. Ralph James on August 20th, 2007 12:04 pm

There goes Doug again, complicating what should be simple – the only guy I know who can take three letters (LOL) and make it god-awful mess (el-oh-elled) – there is a Jay-Jay the Jet plane episode that you should watch Doug. It teaches the valuable lesson that you should work smarter – not harder – writing el-oh-elled might be harder work, but it isn’t smarter according to that toddler program that kid watched when he was 2.

  118. doug on August 20th, 2007 1:51 pm

Amityville 2: The Possession is a good movie.

Seriously. Better than the first one.

    just my $.02

  122. Ralph James on August 20th, 2007 6:01 pm

Don’t feel bad, Princess. I wished Amityville was true too – in fact I think there is a part of me that still holds onto that belief.

As for Amityville 2? I don’t recall – I remember seeing Amityville 3D in the theater when it came out during that 80s 3D resurgence.

  123. Sasser on August 20th, 2007 7:48 pm

Amityville 2 is indeed a guilty pleasure. It rips off The Exorcist, features Burt Young AND includes some hot demon fueled incest!

And Princess, I beg of you…do not invoke the name of Pazuzu lightly…

    So was Rodney tho…
Girls this is lou! Lou, these are girls!

And Pope of Greenwich village, Burt is in that too. Good stuff!

but yeah give Amityville 2 a chance. It looks like crap but its better than all the other crap ones.

    Chris,
I honestly don’t even know what a Pazuzu is! :)

  129. Ralph James on August 21st, 2007 9:45 am

Uh-oh – I think think the Princess said Pazuzu 3 times – Chris explain to her what Pazuzu is and what she’s in for for invoking him.

    I’ll check out Amityville 2.

  130. doug on August 21st, 2007 10:06 am

If you watched the exorcist you MUST know WHO Pazuzu is…

  131. Sasser on August 21st, 2007 11:01 am

Oh honey, if you knew Pazuzu like I knew Pazuzu…

Old Paz is the demon who possessed Linda Blair in The Exorcist. Remember the horrific big stone statue in the opening Iraq sequences? That’s our boy. He has a wicked sense of humor and a very bad temper.

Speaking of Linda Blair, she still looks pretty good these days. Can anybody imagine trying to get her into the sack? Being in bed with the Exorcist would be kinda spooky, yes?

  132. Ralph James on August 21st, 2007 11:36 am

I remember Linda Blair saying in an interview that she couldn’t get laid because guys were afraid of her because of that movie. On the flip side of that, Carrie Fisher was getting laid all the time because guys wanted to do Princess Leia.

  133. Sasser on August 21st, 2007 11:44 am

I’d do them both. Right now.

  134. doug on August 21st, 2007 2:08 pm

  138. Sasser on August 23rd, 2007 10:49 pm

Well. Looks like everyone wisely backed-off. Whew…

  139. doug on August 27th, 2007 2:03 pm

I think this got pulled at the behest of Warner Bros. I guess they dont want ANYONE to see who really made this movie. So secretive. Its not like WHO SHOT KENNEDY or something…

  140. Ralph James on August 28th, 2007 10:14 am

Actually, I heard that if you saw this doc you would know WHO SHOT KENNEDY as well as WHAT LANDED AT ROSWELL and the truth about 911 and the LUNAR LANDING. So you can see why they don’t want to release this.

  141. Jonathan on September 2nd, 2007 12:48 pm

Very well said, Ralph! I knew Zombie’s Halloween “re-imagining” would be a piece of shit before it went into production.

  142. Girl on September 2nd, 2007 3:08 pm

SPOT ON!!! What an insult to the art of filmmaking.

  143. Sasser on September 2nd, 2007 4:23 pm

The tag-line for Carpenter’s original: “THE NIGHT HE CAME HOME.”

The tag-line for Zombie’s should be: “THE NIGHT HE CAN’T COME HOME AGAIN”

    Get it?

What a boring waste of time. Zombie doesn’t understand Halloween. It can’t be forgotten fast enough.

  144. Doug on September 3rd, 2007 10:29 am

Great review Ralph! Well written! I have not seen it yet, I know I shouldn’t waste my money, but I probably will. This is an amazing disappointment. I thought Rob understood the genre better than this. Nice catch on the photos of the girls on the steps, I didnt notice the similarity of posing to the original cast at first.

  145. The Angry Princess on September 4th, 2007 7:42 am

Wow, I knew it was going to be bad but it was that awful? I have to see it naturally to kill my curiosity but I think I will just wait to rent it. I read somewhere that Zobie bitched about people making remakes on horror films, and now he has done what he has condemned in the first place.Well now that he has made a remake I wonder if that suddenly changes his prior opinion?

  146. Ralph James on September 4th, 2007 2:42 pm

Great interview. UGH – I really, REALLY got to start making films – somebody shoot me – This chick is nuts, she needs to get naked in one of our movies.

Kitty Klimaxx – That is classic!

  147. Sasser on September 4th, 2007 4:56 pm

In a recent interview, Zombie claims to have no problem with remakes. But he still insists that this one is HIS take on Halloween.

He also goes on to make note of all the problems he has with the original…especially the “randomness” of it.

And according to Zombie, no one heard of Donald Pleasence before Halloween. Sure, I guess no one saw The Great Escape, the James Bond movies he was in…

Zombie goes on to say a lot of other things that make little sense too…it’s all in the latest Rue Morgue Magazine.

  156. Ralph James on September 12th, 2007 11:05 am

I’m going to go out on a limb here and say I like the title. We all have been pre-conditioned to hate these things no matter what. The Prequels and the constant remakes that fail have just made us think that this is going to be just another lame attempt to capitalize on a brand name. Chris, you made up your mind already and why you keep going to see shite movies time and time again I won’t understand. You’re their biggest supporter. If you know they will suck why are you going? Why anybody paid to see “Revenge of the Sith” in the theater is beyond my comprehension – it doesn’t matter if you think it is the best film out of the three – the previous two were so god-awful that there was no way they could save it – yet people lined up to throw their good hard earned cash down. As far as Indy, there really hasn’t been a “bad” movie – the Last Crusade has its problems but I can still watch and enjoy it – so why would we think this won’t be at least that entertaining.

It’s only a title. There are some great movies with bad titles and bad movies with great titles. Means nothing.

  157. doug on September 12th, 2007 2:18 pm

    Nice Ralph.

i dont mind the title either. And the three Indy movies are WAY better than the three last SW films.

  162. doug on October 18th, 2007 12:20 pm

Great write up Chris! I too watched the DVD last week, and then started to peruse thru my copy of Outrageous Conduct. There are some amazing stories (!) to come out of that book. I can see now why Spielberg choose to do such a sickeningly sweet episode after the tragedy. His and the other three, I was suprised to learn, were all shot AFTER Landis’ infamous one. I think Steven wanted to make something as light as possible to offset the feelings people would have about Landis’ episode. I would have loved to see his take on MONSTERS ARE DUE ON MAPLE STREET as he was going to do that one before the accident occured. It’s a shame like the Poltergeist DVD, this movie could have used a documentary, but I understand NO ONE wants to go on record about it all. Too bad this also finished off ANY possibilty of any future Twilight Zone movies. I hope one day it could be resurrected from its limbo.

  163. Chris Blake Sasser on October 18th, 2007 1:15 pm

Agreed, my friend. Interestingly enough, only a few years ago, Landis was pitching the idea of a new anthology film entitled REALLY SCARY. But nothing ever came of it.

  164. Chris Blake Sasser on October 21st, 2007 2:45 pm

I just recalled another horrifying bit of cinematic business that should be mentioned: Frank Booth in David Lynch’s Blue Velvet. “Wanna go for a ride, neighnor?” Christ, no!

  165. Ralph James on October 23rd, 2007 7:54 am

I just added some of my scariest to the post, however, I know I am missing a bunch.

  166. cummins on October 23rd, 2007 2:12 pm

Hey guys, an interesting point to add is that the eventual video success of this did lead to the Twilight Zone tv revival of the 80s, which actually had some damn fine episodes. (The Adam Arkin time one comes to mind).

  167. cummins on October 23rd, 2007 2:17 pm

Good picks. One of the scariest flicks i’ve ever seen is this documentary called “Hell House” about haunted houses created by conservative Christian groups that preach against the evils of, well, basically everything that is fun in life. Well worth Netflixing, especially at this time of year.

  169. doug on October 23rd, 2007 4:22 pm

    Nice Lists!

I would also add DESCENT to this. When they first see the creatures thru the camera lens. That and all the claustrophobic cave crawling. Yikes!
I want to see Hell house. Ive heard of that…off to netflix!

  170. Chris Blake Sasser on October 23rd, 2007 10:26 pm

Was it in fact the video success of the film that led to the revival? I just thought that it was due to the success of the low-budget syndicated hit TALES FROM THE DARKSIDE and the fact that NBC was reviving HITCHCOCK PRESENTS and ABC was going ahead with what eventually became known as “Spielberg’s Foley” – AMAZING STORIES. It was a natural that CBS revive The Zone. But you could be right. There were quite a few decent episodes in that series…some by among others, Wes Craven…

  171. Chris Blake Sasser on October 23rd, 2007 10:31 pm

That short was nicely done…but there was an animated one I saw a few years ago on Atom Films…it was set to be a series…perhaps Doug can recall this. The first episode had a man with a shotgun blasting zombies in a church- I think. The cross hairs on the gun was a crucifix. Way cool. The second episode was about a guy in a boat on lake fishing…and at the bottom was a zombie. I wish I could remember what they were called…

  172. Ralph James on October 24th, 2007 8:39 am

I didn’t like that animated short. I’m not a fan of that “realistic” video game style animation. I thought it was really slow and when the zombie woman comes into the bedroom looking like a Bukkake victim, I had enough.

  173. doug on October 24th, 2007 9:24 am

Chris I wish I could remember the name of that short film you mentioned! It was indeed very cool..

  174. cummins on October 25th, 2007 11:09 am

I love this short. I first heard of filmmaker Ronald Becerra a few years back when he would regularly show his horror/sci-fi themed paintings at the LaPelle gallery in Old City. Incredible stuff. That short is just a precursor to a larger story he wants to tell, and I hope he gets the financing to get his chance. Unlike the rotoscoping in “A Scanner Darkly,” this film actually utilizes the technique smoothly and flawlessly, making it look like his paintings come to life. I love the slow build of dread that the film executes. It’s the end of the world, but they don’t know it yet.

Sort of off topic, but well worth mentioning is the new Dark Horse miniseries “Living with the Dead.” Very funny, and you can’t beat the Richard Corben cover or included zombie survival mask!

  175. cummins on October 25th, 2007 11:10 am

I’m probably wrong. I often am.

I saw my share of Whore Dorothy’s as well. The holiday name has been officially changed to “HO-lloween”

I think what we need is for the Ben Cooper company to revise it’s old costumes from the 70s but in Adult sizes. Let’s face it, the kids today won’t fall for it but us 70s / 80s children, now grown up would love to wear one of those again to a Halloween party if only they fit. I say bring them back for us Gen X’ers.

  178. Chris Blake Sasser on November 2nd, 2007 7:32 am

  179. doug on November 2nd, 2007 1:06 pm

I was thinking about the Ben cooper things too! i wish we could make these again…

YOu guys shoulda come to Bordentown. I had about 80 kids in an hour. i saw a few ghoulds and hommade horror costumes mixed in with the Jason’s etc.
Plus the guy around the corner , the whole street was decked out in WAR OF THE WORLDS. I think I sent you a pic. He had a giant Alien ship, and was dressed with Grey alien face/costumes. He had a couple people out front giving out candy and prizes for correctly answering trivia( i won a silver “ray gun” for knowing WotW movie was made in 1953!) It was a giant block party. almost like south street! The whole street had Alien flags and horror scenes mixed in around and in the houses. At the end one house had over 100 carved and lit pumpkins in the yard. Halloween is alive and well here. You guys should come see it. We are going to try and be involved with this next year.

Did you know Jodi Foster directed Home for the Holidays?

  198. cummins on January 18th, 2008 3:38 pm

I’m seeing the shit out of this one. It sounds wonderful and from what I hear it not only lives up to the hype, but exceeds it.

  199. Doug on January 20th, 2008 11:23 pm

It lives up to the hype and more.Your assessments are right on. I loved it. I want to write the inevitiable sequel.

I truly belive we are living thru a great time for horror films. (’Hostel’ type torture porn notwithstanding)

  200. cummins on January 21st, 2008 11:08 am

I loved it quite a bit. I’m of the mind though that it shouldn’t be sequelized. I don’t want to know anything about the monster’s origins…nor am I interested in seeing another “found tape” chronicling more monster wreckage in NYC. This is perfect as is, i’m presented with the right amount of info and I like the mystery of it all. As Doug says, it a sequel is inevitable, but we all know how crappy sequels get and i’d hate for anything to take away from the movie’s initial impact. It is perfect entertainment.

  202. cummins on January 21st, 2008 11:22 am

    From comingsoon.net–

Generally, if we love a film we are more than happy to see a sequel. In the case of Cloverfield, however, a sequel would actually take away from the enjoyment and purpose of the first film. But director Matt Reeves is saying that there could well be another on the way. No, Matt Reeves, NO! There are minimal spoilers in the following paragraphs.

Reeves told Comingsoon.net : “This was so fun ’cause we’d never done anything like it, and I think we’d want to find a similar challenge, to find a way to have its roots in this but be fresh and new, otherwise you’re just repeating yourself. There’s a moment on the Brooklyn Bridge, and there was a guy filming something on the side of the bridge, and Hud sees him filming and he turns over and he sees the ship that’s been capsized and sees the headless Statue of Liberty, and then he turns back and this guy’s briefly filming him. In my mind that was two movies intersecting for a brief moment, and I thought there was something interesting in the idea that this incident happened and there are so many different points of view, and there are several different movies at least happening that evening and we just saw one piece of another. That idea sort of tickled me. We’ll have to see if anyone would want a sequel. If the movie does well and we find a compelling reason to do so then it would be fun to do a sequel”.

Obviously, the movie has done very well this weekend. But, the whole point of the movie is that you’re experiencing a monster attack as if you were there and with no other information on the beast other than what immediate news reports and the fact that it’s almost stepping on you can provide. It’s about an experience more than a story, which a sequel could only dilute. Explaining the origins would just make for a generic monster movie. Or, just following the same events from a different camcorder would be utterly pointless. Some films should just be left to stand alone and this is one of them.

  203. cummins on January 21st, 2008 11:25 am

Oh my sass. You make me sad. I’m gonna marry Cloverfield.

  204. doug on January 21st, 2008 11:49 am

I know ralph disagrees with me, but the sequl shoudl dump the POV camera idea. And become a more traditional narrative. Interesting idea tho, from that article, cummins. the idea of intersecting POV stories. That is interesting. And yeah a sequel will diminsh the original, unless they do something new. I look to ALIEN/ALIENS when I think of how it shouldbe handled. Cameron made a war film to Scott’s haunted house pic. Thats what needs to happen here.

Sasser, you really should see it before you decide your bored by it.

  205. Chris Blake Sasser on January 21st, 2008 1:19 pm

    Double Zzzzzzz.

  206. cummins on January 21st, 2008 2:15 pm

I think it’s safe to say that Sasser won’t be seeing the “Sex & the City” film either. Am I right?

  207. Ralph James on January 21st, 2008 2:38 pm

Chris, you look like an idiot commenting on a movie you haven’t even seen. Go see the movie, then put your Double and Triple ZZZZZ in, otherwise your comments are empty, completely devoid of any value. It just makes you look like sour grapes.

And I won’t comment on a sequel, sure Hollywood will want one because of greed but I think there should never be a sequel – not everything needs to have a sequel or be part of a trilogy or have a prequel. Let this one stand on it’s own two monsterous feet.

  208. doug on January 21st, 2008 2:51 pm

Hey Chris, Do you yell at the kids to get off your lawn too?
    :-P

Okay, let’s have a vote. Tomorrow night Chris you can watch Halloween/TCM/poltergeist which are all classics but you’ve seen them a hundred ‘+’ times or you can see CLOVERFIELD which is a lot of NEW monsters stomping and eating people and causing a lot of chaos in NYC presented in a fresh new way and you’ll get to see something cool for the FIRST time again. Okay? So let’s vote.

  209. Ralph James on January 21st, 2008 3:04 pm

    Doug,

Now tell the truth – did you steal this idea from Close Encounters?

Okay, let’s have a vote. Tomorrow night you can play Goofy Golf, which is a lot of standing in line and shoving and pushing, and probably getting a ‘zero,’ or you can see Pinocchio, which is a lot of furry animals and magic, and you’ll have a wonderful time. Okay? So let’s vote.
[the kids all vote for golf]

I have a feeling Chris is going to vote for Goofy Golf.

  210. doug on January 21st, 2008 3:07 pm

    DING DING DING!
    we have a winnah!

  211. Alexandros on January 21st, 2008 3:41 pm

Cloverfield was interesting like Children of Men with a twist of effects and BS as per Starship Troopers. Albiet it was better than the abortion that was Dragonheart…. it still left me bored and uninterested. I’d rather have seen the movie from the creature’s POV and not have been motion sick through the first half. Anyone else boo that the cameraman got spit out?

Let it be noted: my pretzel bites from Regal Cinemas tasted just as bad.

Please JJ no sequal. I don’t care where “it” came from. I don’t care that “it” looks alien/bug and swims in New York Harbor. There are stranger things in NY and they don’t need any explaination either.

  212. James Gelet on January 21st, 2008 4:00 pm

I have all the praise in the world for Cloverfield. And I already did before I even saw the movie. Just because I could tell that the way the movie was being built and marketed was extremely “un-Hollywood” for a movie of its kind. It didn’t have a cast filled with movie stars, it didn’t have a big name director, and it had stupid title. On top of that, its marketing campaign was designed to make you very curious. Upon seeing a few TV spots, I had no idea if it was terrorists or aliens or what causing all the ruckus. All I knew was something awful was happening in Manhatten, and we were getting a very personal look at it from the point of view of a few young New Yorkers. That was all I needed to know to become very interested.

Despite being as interested as I was, I resisted to temptation to learn the more about movie by scouring the internet for answers. I decided to respect the filmmakers’ decision to want its audience to be as uninformed and as curious as possible. Boy am I glad I did because that really added to the experience. In fact, right here I didn’t have time to read every response, but I’m going to follow Ralph’s lead and not reveal anything in detail of the movie so you still have the chance to see it the way I did.

I’ll just say this. The movie is effective because as huge as the disaster is, it’s actually incidental. The movie is much, much more about its characters than the larger than life catastrophe that’s going on around them. This is a basic thing that makes movies great, but Hollywood seems to forget all too often.

It’s also great because it follows a Hitchcockian strategy of suspense in that it achieves more by showing less and using the power of suggestion. There really are a lot of instances where you as the audience are required to fill in some gaps by using your imagination as to what is happening. Once again, this is exremely refreshing in a movie age where Hollywood insists on rubbing all the CGI it possibly can your face.

That brings me to the last point that I have to agree with Ralph wholeheartedly on. I’m usually very anti-CGI. But I wouldn’t be if it were always used the way it is used in Cloverfield. So many times when I see a CGI heavy movie, I feel like I’m watching video game. Spider-Man 3 made me want to put my head through every wall in the theater! But in Cloverfield everything looks REAL. Everything. This is probably because much of it was shrouded in darkness so many of the tell tale signs of CGI could be covered up. It’s also probably because the effects team was really really good and wouldn’t compromise on quality. Probably a combination of both, and I’m thankful.

  213. cummins on January 21st, 2008 5:12 pm

If Sasser goes to play Goofy Golf, i’d like to go too. Then see Cloverfield again.

  214. doug on January 21st, 2008 5:47 pm

  218. Chris Blake Sasser on January 21st, 2008 10:05 pm

I’m so sorry if I offended anyone’s delicate sensibilities. In 1984 Egon Spengler pronounced, “Print is Dead.” In 2008 Sasser declares that Cinema is Dead. That’s right, it is OVERFIELD.

  219. Ralph James on January 21st, 2008 10:32 pm

Oh boy… Overfield? ugh. and the only one who sounds offended here is you, Chris. How can you bad mouth Cloverfield when you supported Zombie’s Halloween, All 3 prequel movies, and tons of other crappy remakes. If you want to declare that “Cinema is Dead” base it on one of those movies that you paid to see that are actually responsible for the death of cinema instead of one that actually tried to do something new or at least took an idea and made it new again.

  223. Jon on January 22nd, 2008 10:46 am

Some old bag, bitch reviewer, Victoria Alexander from filmsinreview.com says that Cloverfield is “not for anyone over 30.” WHAT? She did give it a good review though.

    MORE PRAISE FOR CLOVERFIELD:

The overall effect becomes terrifying at times for the viewer and for that the movie scores a lot of points

What sets the film apart, really, is that the monster is just a backdrop. The main focus centers on how a small group of people cope and react under such an extreme crisis.

It’s an event movie in January, and when was the last time we had one of those? Experience it on the big screen with an enthusiastic crowd.

clearly a reflection of post 9/11 fears that boasts terrific effects…a convincing ride if not a terrifically ground-breaking one.

The filmmakers wisely avoid showing you everything, instead showing only bits and hints of what’s going on, a technique that really fuels fear in a viewer.

Cloverfield is an intense and engaging monster movie that may very well breathe life back into a dead genre while demonstrating that there’s fertile soil left to be tilled in this particular cinematic field.

This film takes you into the heart of the maelstrom and leaves you there.

Will grab you in its jaws, toss you around like a chew toy for a rollicking 80 minutes (yes, it’s a short – but oh so sweet – flick) and still leave you panting for more.

A time capsule of our current fears displaced onto our nightmares.

An effective film, deploying its special effects well and never breaking the illusion that it is all happening as we see it.

Raises the bar for monster movies to Statue of Liberty heights.

Cloverfield brings chaos and terror in one of the most memorable American monster films in some time.

You’re still left breathless, wowed and wanting for more

In the monster-attack scenes, the movie’s style — the apocalypse barely glimpsed — is chilling: We’re seeing essentially what we would see if we were there

It’s hard to imagine how anyone will top this. It’s magnificent in its harsh reality. It is the monster movie remade for the 21st-century, post-9/11 world.

I can’t wait to see this again.

  231. Jon on January 22nd, 2008 12:33 pm

I think Cloverfield breaks some of the conventions of modern horror…and it’s making some people nuts. One of the most nagging questions seems to be “where did the monster come from?” I think some people can’t enjoy the film because it’s driving them crazy that it refuses to explain everything. There’s no obligatory scene with a scientist who tells the main characters where the creature comes from, why it’s here, and how to kill it. If that scientist even exists, the way the film is presented, the audience would never know it unless the characters did. Even when they meet the soldiers, who should be more in the know, they still don’t get any answers. There’s this real sense of “no one knows what this thing is but it doesn’t really matter because we have to destroy it.” And I’m totally fine with that. But I think alot of people have gotten so used to the current trends of modern horror where everything is spelled out and nothing is left to the imagination that they almost get offended by a film that dares to do something different.

  232. Ralph James on January 22nd, 2008 12:43 pm

Well put, Jon. I don’t know anyone complaining about it, but I guess if they were going to, that would be what gets them in an uproar, that and the camera aspect. Studios are already talking prequel, sequel whatever they can to cash in. I wish more horror films would follow this type of story telling, or lack there-of – We don’t need to know where this monster came from, what it wants – Cloverfield is perfect and when it divorces Cummins, I’m going to there to marry it next.

Jason Lee cast in Prince of Darkness remake. The decision was based solely on his ’stache. Studio execs are quoted as saying, “We realized after the original, people had no idea what the hell was going on in that movie – but they loved the mustache.”

  252. Ralph James on January 22nd, 2008 4:07 pm

    Tripe (n)

    2. Informal Something of no value; rubbish.

I’m going to assume that Chris is referring to the rubbery lining of the stomach of cattle since the only think of on value is a baseless opinion of an unviewed movie.

  274. blake on February 28th, 2008 2:54 am

    this was crap.
    Do not waste your time.

  275. The Angry Princess on February 28th, 2008 1:41 pm

It’s pretty cppl…I love Reese that was the very first thing I saw and fell in love with her. Beauty and Brain= lethal :)

  276. The Angry Princess on February 28th, 2008 1:42 pm

This sounds interesting! Is it worth it?

  277. Ralph James on February 28th, 2008 3:20 pm

I’ll bring it to Monster Mania for you. You might dig it.

  278. Doug on March 5th, 2008 1:05 am

Leave Kris at home, the self proclaimed photographer didnt know how to use a camera

  281. Ralph James on March 5th, 2008 5:23 pm

What’s with the Kris-hatin’ going on. She is good as ghost bait. I still say, MORE KRIS!

They are the weblinks for Philly-area ghosthunters. Though I hear they are very cliquey and tough to get involved with.

    Bullshit or not?

  283. CUMMINS on March 6th, 2008 2:06 pm

Also, that episode at the one jail where dude thought he had a picture of a shadowperson when it was clearly a pic of a photographer’s shadow was genius. I like debunking!

  284. Ralph James on March 6th, 2008 2:54 pm

Wow, Cummins, I thought you only debunked Bigfoot.

  285. Ralph James on March 6th, 2008 3:23 pm

That sounds really cool. And I don’t buy into the “orbs as spirits” theory. It’s dust or bugs. I get so aggravated when people like Andy Andrews on Ghost Hunters gets giddy as a school boy when he sees an “orb.”

  286. The Angry Princess on March 6th, 2008 7:21 pm

lol I know what you mean I have one pic of a weird one in Salem nj cemetary I’ll cshow you but I honestly beleive that it is dust or moisture.

  287. Ralph James on March 7th, 2008 12:35 am

I have a great ghost photo, full bodied apparition reflecting in a large decanter in an old home. I need to dig it up and put it online. I tried really hard to debunk it, can’t do it. It’s not really obvious, but it’s there.

  288. Drew on March 7th, 2008 11:43 pm

These are total crap, they find nothing and have the same lines over and over “wow” “did you hear that”

They use “detectors” which do nothing to do with ghosts.

    They waste time on Sci-fi

Ads, well the companies must think the program is so bad, that people can’t wait to see the ads, they are more entertaining and believable than the crap show.

  289. Ralph James on March 7th, 2008 11:52 pm

I think the show is still entertaining. If they are frauds, I’m still entertained. I don’t know what you mean by “the ads.”

Which detectors do have something to do with ghosts?

  290. Doug on March 8th, 2008 1:05 am

    I sense another ‘MIST’ debate…

  291. Ralph James on March 8th, 2008 1:08 am

How can you debate this review? It’s impossible.

  292. Doug on March 8th, 2008 10:50 am

heh. I guess it would be a Mass-debate, if we did.

  293. Ralph James on March 8th, 2008 10:58 am

What are you debating? I said it was good. You are going to debate me that it is brilliant? Genius? Groundbreaking?

  294. doug on March 10th, 2008 4:57 pm

You “mist” my joke. “Mass-debate”. Get it? :-P

  295. Ralph James on March 11th, 2008 7:24 pm

Oh boy, Doug. What’s next? You pull out a rubber chicken?

Folks, he’ll be here all week, make sure to tip the waitstaff.

  296. CUMMINS on March 12th, 2008 3:29 pm

I’m completely with you on this one. Well said. Blah. That’s how i felt. Blah.

  297. CUMMINS on March 12th, 2008 3:31 pm

I fear and love Bigfoot. But debunk? Never!

  298. CUMMINS on March 12th, 2008 3:32 pm

Nice spam, Jarvis. This show is all about They Live and Zach Galligan. Believe it!

  299. The Angry Princess on March 14th, 2008 7:50 am

I really like ed norton. When I first saw him in Primal Fear I was totally wowed. One of the scenes from his movies that always comes to mind is that scene in American History X with the guy on the curb!
    What times are your interviews?

  300. Ralph James on March 14th, 2008 1:44 pm

OMG, that’s the worst scene EVER!

I don’t have the times, I should by tonight. The convention people are slow at setting the times for the celebrities so I had to wait until that before I could set a time. I still have your number, I’ll call you.

  301. CUMMINS on March 14th, 2008 1:44 pm

Don’t make me Ang Lee, you wouldn’t like it when i’m Ang Lee.

  302. Doug on March 15th, 2008 1:48 am

I am in the minority who think the Ang lee HULK was a good film. That being said , this looks good too.

  303. The Angry Princess on March 15th, 2008 9:02 am

That scene was whacked and I never forgot it. Hopefully I’ll bump into you guys today I feel awful and don’t know how long I’ll last.

  306. Doug on March 25th, 2008 7:58 pm

I would like to see this movie…

  307. Doug on March 25th, 2008 7:59 pm

This makes me want to watch MY BODYGUARD again…

  308. Doug on March 25th, 2008 9:57 pm

Lets hope Spielberg wont let him ruin this.

  309. Herb on March 26th, 2008 9:08 am

You reacted the exact way he expected, fulfilling stereotypes. He gave up after so many whined when Phantom Menace came out and didn’t live up to almost two decades of speculation and perfectionist ideals.

His skin is much tougher than any blog, and he honestly doesn’t car what people think. His attempt to temper the expected hue and cry is just his way of saying, “If you don’t like it, that’s your problem. It’s a movie. Get over it.”

He has enough money that now he can make the movies for the art of film making, so no, he doesn’t have to worry about fans *or* the money.

  310. Ralph James on March 26th, 2008 9:46 am

Oh, Herb… Why did you have to go and defend George. The reason the fans are whining is because of The Phantom Menace and the Prequels as a whole. We wouldn’t have done so had he took the time to make a good film, didn’t have to be a great film – just an ok film would have sufficed – but he went and made the worst film ever with The Phantom Menace – Dueuce Bigalow, European Gigalo is better than Episode 1. He continued to make bad choice through the entire 3 prequels.

As a filmmaker he should be trying to make a great film. It is obvious, that when he has full control, he ruins everything. Put the writing back in the hands of Kasdan, let someone else direct – the only saving grace with Indy 4 is that others will hopefully tell Lucas NO – I trust in Speilbert – he still cares and I think Ford does too – Lucas can go to hell.

  311. Ralph James on March 26th, 2008 9:48 am

Oh, and forgive my typos – my blood was boiling as I wrote – it is Speilberg.

  312. doug on March 26th, 2008 9:57 am

Luca$ sucks. He is a technician, and thats all he is good at. He should stay away from “writing” and “directing” and as much as he “loves” Joseph Campbell, he can’t tell a story to save his life. Campbell is rolling over in his grave with the thoughts of a young Anakin poorly written and acted by Jake Lloyd and the wooden Hayden Christenson. May I remind you of the final scene in the horrible episode 3?

    “NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO”

His skill now is making money, not art. And there is nothing wrong with that skill. Just don’t try to pass yourself off as some mythical story teller and then denouce people who have GIVEN you thier money, as fools and idiots becuase they have a negative opinion of his work that is sorely lacking in his inner circle of sycophants including the likes of Rick Mccallum. Bring back Gary Kurtz!

He got lucky with Star Wars. Luca$’s tricks as a director worked on that. They haven’t worked since.

  313. Ralph James on March 26th, 2008 11:47 am

I think I have to rent this now for two reasons.

1.) I now want to grab a beer and sit in my big comfy chair with a warm blanket. Puppet Show is just icing on the cake.

2.) If I hate, get ready to roast!

  314. Ralph James on March 27th, 2008 12:02 am

This is such a great idea. Very good work!

  315. Doug on March 27th, 2008 7:36 pm

Yeah this is cool! Im looking forward to this!

  316. Lisa Markhoff on March 28th, 2008 9:04 pm

    wait.
what the fuck does “having a kid” have to do with anything?

  317. Ralph James on March 28th, 2008 9:24 pm

Did you see the movie, Lisa? If you did you know the father kills his kid. So “having a kid” I don’t think you would buy into that ending. I thought it was bullshit. Would you shoot your dog, wait, yeah North Jersey – you probably would – why am I even arguing with someone from Jersey?

  318. Lisa Markhoff on March 29th, 2008 3:33 pm

    DISCLAIMER:
as a rule, i am not comfortable discussing religion in a public forum. however, today i will deviate from that for just a moment.

well you certainly feel quite strongly about this and you seem very open about it. so let me ask you – and i’m not trying to trivialize your viewpoint, i’m just curious.
do you accept Yoda as your Lord and Savior?

  319. Ralph James on March 29th, 2008 3:40 pm

No, Lisa. I thought you knew that YOU are my Lord and Savior.

  320. Lisa Markhoff on March 29th, 2008 3:43 pm

    well it makes ME horny.

  321. Doug on March 30th, 2008 10:39 pm

Its a crime this is not on DVD in this version…

  322. Doug on March 31st, 2008 4:14 pm

I used to watch this all the time when I was a kid. Holy cow. What a find!

  323. doug on April 3rd, 2008 3:22 pm

My god i am so tempted to make a snarky comment about this music , but i will refrain. :-P

  324. Ralph James on April 3rd, 2008 4:19 pm

Are you retarded? You got to be kidding me… Dude you are really beginning to show your age – OLD MAN!

This stuff rocks, the Juno soundtrack ROCKS. It’s cool and weird and hip. So, now that there is a music category you may feel free to post about your Barry Manilow collection. And let the snarky-ness begin.

  325. Doug on April 3rd, 2008 7:37 pm

Yeah its cool if you like hippie music.

Heh I guess I am old, because Jenn and I were the only ones who laughed in Juno when she went off on Sonic Youth as being overrated and nothing but noise. No one else thought that line was funny. heh.

I wouldn’t say it “rocks”. I hope you bring yer pillow cause I’m betting it will be a snoozefest.

We are going to see Carbon Silicon on Monday, a band born of members of the Clash. You know, a band that “rocks”.

    Snarky +1

    p.s.
I do like the song from Juno, btw.

  326. Ralph James on April 4th, 2008 9:38 am

Oh, look at me, I’m Doug, I’m so hip with my Carbon Silicon – The Clash are long since dead, you my friend are all that remains from that ancient music.

I love hippie music so I should enjoy this stuff. I like hippie chicks too.

Not everything has to have some deep meaning or be analyzed for it merit. Music can be silly, stupid, lighthearted and fun. It doesn’t always have to be cool to validate your inner 80s punk child. Sometimes simple is better.

  327. doug on April 4th, 2008 1:07 pm

eh, im just dumping on you because you dump all over my music posts. Heh.

  328. Ralph James on April 4th, 2008 1:17 pm

I know what you are doing. But I don’t think I dump all over your music posts – just that REM thing. I’m usually just effin’ with you cause it’s fun to get you all bent out of shape.

  329. Ralph James on April 6th, 2008 1:40 am

The featured video on our home page is a Heston tribute video I found on Youtube.

  330. Doug on April 6th, 2008 3:01 am

I know a lot of folks think of Ben Hur or El Cid, but for me its all about the sci fi movies he made: Planet of the apes, Soylent Green and Omega man. Thats what I’ll think of most when it comes to Chuck Heston.

  331. Ralph James on April 6th, 2008 9:55 am

I agree, those are my favorite films of his but that’s because those are from our generation.

  332. Michael Collazo on April 8th, 2008 2:50 am

The link to the video doesn’t work. You added a space between the “.” and the “com”.

  333. Ralph James on April 8th, 2008 9:21 am

The link to the video has been corrected. Thanks for heads up, Michael.

  334. Doug on April 8th, 2008 7:27 pm

  335. The Angry Princess on April 10th, 2008 8:21 pm

    sorry michael thanks ralph

  336. Doug on April 12th, 2008 10:50 am

oh my, I will be first in line for this.

  337. James DeFeo on April 12th, 2008 10:58 am

Doug, is that sarcasm? Although I feel Rose McGowan shouldn’t be cast since Rodriguez is doing it I think it will be amazing. I will be in front of you in line. I guess that makes me zero in line.

  338. lisa markhoff on April 12th, 2008 11:02 am

it’s no secret i absolutely adored rose.
but i gotta say, after the whole thing with her and rodriguez during planet terror …..
    i’m not as into her.
and with her in this role, i feel like “she didn’t earn it” – she got it cause she’s bangin HIM.
and Barbarella always makes me think of Jane Fonda.
    i’ll stop there.
this one’s gonna have to get stellar reviews to raise my interest.
let me know how it goes doug.

  339. Sasser on April 14th, 2008 8:42 pm

Rose is a marginal talent at best. But the super-human Robert Rodriguez will make it worth a look. Probably two.

  340. Sasser on April 14th, 2008 8:44 pm

Good stuff. Just, really good goddamned stuff.

  341. doug on April 15th, 2008 2:19 pm

I was not being sarcastic. I have liked Ms. Mcgowan since the 90’s when I saw her in DOOM GENERATION.

  342. Doug on April 15th, 2008 11:53 pm

I really remember seeing this back in the day. Wow. Great find!

so looking forward to May 18th.
gotta ask though. in the film Wish, does anything bad happen to the poodle?

  347. James DeFeo on April 26th, 2008 9:54 pm

Nothing bad happens to the poodle, however the poodle does eat brains after someone puts a bullet through their head. I got a good laugh out of that.

  348. lisa markhoff on April 27th, 2008 7:20 pm

    indeed James, indeed.

  349. Aerek on April 28th, 2008 9:54 pm

This man is a crazy stalker. He has put tattoo’s of Kimberly on himself. Thats just strange to me. She signs almost all of her e-mails love you. She’s a friendly person. I’ve seen the e-mails this man has sent to her. He tells her constantly that he beat someone at a store and had to speed away before anyone could catch him. He always claims to have started fights in parking lots. This is not a sane person.

Aerek (a true Kimberly Lynn Cole fan)

  350. Aerek on April 28th, 2008 10:12 pm

My response was to someone who was harassing her. Thankfully the admin. of the site has removed his hateful comments.

  351. James DeFeo on April 28th, 2008 10:17 pm

We won’t tolerate harassment on this site. The nut job stalker has been taken care of.

    HA! This sounds awesome!

  359. Rachel on May 21st, 2008 11:14 am

I think a Buffy movie would be a fantastic idea. It was such a successful television series and finished in such a way that there would be plenty of storyline to go on. It could even include Angel cast. It would be great to see the cast together again for one more time after all these years. Sex in the city has done it, and that has been greatly accepted. It would be a sure hit!

  360. Jacob Bruce on May 22nd, 2008 2:46 pm

A great interview with a great actor. I can’t wait for more films.

  361. Nick on May 23rd, 2008 12:44 am

I am not OK with Russians being demonized in Hollywood movies over and over. While Soveit Union was led by an evil guy Stalin, who wasn’t even a Russian himself, that was a hard period for normal, average Russians. The peoples of Russia suffered communism and reminding them of the Red Army in family movies is just too desrciminating and doesn’t fit the “lets be together for peace” agenda of this world at all!

  362. lisa on May 23rd, 2008 2:50 pm

does Harrison take his shirt off?
if so, then it’s all worth it.
monkey attacks, reanimated aliens, all of it.
just so us your chest baby!

  363. CaliMah! CaliMaaaah Shut di dae... on May 23rd, 2008 6:02 pm

You are so right on about this movie. My friends and I all got together to see this film. We were so hyped before the movie, but walking out of the theatre was like leaving a funeral… Fuck that movie..

From the concerned chipmunks as Indy is trying to fight a Rusky on a front of a friggen rocket.. to the sand pit scene and the shitty python they use to get out of it (tell me its a rope.. tell me its a rope!!!) The atomic bomb scene and how he didn’t just fucking disintegrate because the refrigerator had lead in it… jungle foliage slapping the nuts while fencing at 70 miles an hour… the monkies.. the friggen monkies!!!! One could go on and on and on…

but.. after all of that.. the worst possible ending.. friggen flying saucer takes off which leads to scene where Indy and Marion are getting married.. At that moment.. the theatre was completly silent and all I could yell out was.. “ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME????”

Why did they even bring that bitch back.. She was just another piece of ass to Indy in the first movie.. as a matter of fact.. in Raiders, he had already hit it and quit it.. The only reason he went back to her was because he needed that damn medallion…. So now they’re telling me that Indy slipped one past the goalie in Raiders? Indy bangs babes all over the world, gets hit on by hot co-eds constantly, and just happens to knock up the drunk chick in Nepal????

It’s no wonder his son turns out to be a friggen fencing greaser… fucker probably has fetal alcohol syndrome…

Its completely mind blowing how terrible this movie is. I expected it to be great.. I knew it had possibilities of being bad.. but Jeez.. I never could have imagined it being that so fucking ridiculous.

You said it best.. FUCK YOU out of 10

  364. James DeFeo on May 23rd, 2008 6:31 pm

CaliMah, thanks. I’m glad you brought up even more of the nonsense in that movie that I neglected to bring up in my review – honestly, it is just too much for any one person to address. There are so many problems, it may take awhile, but eventually the loyalists to this film will eventually see the error in their ways as we are starting to see with the Star Wars prequels.

  365. James DeFeo on May 23rd, 2008 10:46 pm

Congrats on getting an interview with one of the greatest character actors of our time. Calfa has been on almost every major television series of the 70s and 80s and I love him in Weekend At Bernies. Kudos for The Angry Princess.

  366. The Angry Princess on May 23rd, 2008 10:56 pm

    thank you

  367. The Angry Princess on May 24th, 2008 8:02 pm

that’s a shame, I know how much you guys were looking forward to seeing it. Alot of people have to be very disappointed in this film.
    Sorry it sucked! :(

  368. James DeFeo on May 24th, 2008 9:26 pm

Yeah it was painful. Another friend of mine emailed me this about the film:

    IT FUCKING SUCKED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

FUCK….FUCK….FUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What a waste of money and I wish I could take back those two hours and some minutes , but I can’t….it was a total bore…Indiana Jones was made out to be a bumbling idiot ( I suppose when you get that old, that’s what happens )? Shia Le Bouefs character was made out to be some kind of rebel bad-ass, but that didn’t even work…let’s just make him Karen Allens son!!! That’s it!!!! LUCA$$ has some brain rot going on there…

BORING, BORING, BORING…I could NOT wait for this fucking movie to fucking END GODDAMNIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  369. Sasser on May 28th, 2008 5:44 pm

Agreed. The guy is so much fun to watch.

  370. Sasser on May 28th, 2008 5:52 pm

Sigh. I wanted to love this film. I’m not ashamed to say that Dr. Jones has been my personal hero since June 12, 1981. Of course my expectations were high and hopeful…but I did my best to keep hopes grounded…after all, George Lucas was involved with the project.

The result was an embarrassment for everyone connected to the film…the audience included. I was prepared to cut the film a lot of slack. All it had to do was be as fun and entertaining as the other two sequels.

No dice. It never felt like an Indiana Jones movie. It was insulting, dull, contemptuous and flat out painful to watch. I left the theater feeling nervous and sick to my stomach. These people created Raiders of the Lost Ark?

The “that was thirty years ago” holds no water. This was a mind-numbing misfire thanks to a dreadful mess of a “script” a terrible “story” conceit from Lucas the myth-maker and wasted opportunities on every level. NOTHING works in this film.

    I’ll admit it. I cried.

Nice. Review. Welcome aboard! Who else played at this festival? I totally missed it coming thru Philly. I have to admit I thought the Flaming Lips were going to be a joke one hit wonder band when I heard them back in the 90’s , with the “she don’t use jelly” song. But they have really turned out to be something interesting and unique and have withstood the test of time.

Great review Adam. Looking forward to your Bonnaroo trip article.

  375. Adam on May 31st, 2008 12:18 am

Thanks guys. The lineup was as follows:

    1:30 to 2:30 Grimace
    2:30 to 3:15 RJD2 (in tent)
    3:15 to 4:15 Josh Ritter
    4:30 to 5:30 Bassnectar
    6:00 to 7:30 Disco Biscuits set 1
    7:30 to 8:00 RJD2 (in tent)
    8:00 to 9:00 Disco Biscuits set 2
    9:30 to 11:00 Flaming Lips

However, as I was pretty much just in town to see the Lips, all I saw of the other bands was about the second half of the Disco Biscuits’ second set. I’ve caught some dispariaging remarks about them, and although I wasn’t exactly wowed, what I heard didn’t seem to justify the bad rap they appear to be getting.

And yeah, it’s weird to think that the Lips had already been around for 10 years when they did “She Don’t Use Jelly.” Apparently, the band that drops acid together stays together (Pink Floyd is a bad example.)

This film is great! I love the mackenzie brothers and watched all their films ( i think they have three but not sure) It reminds me of the time when musicians got their fame with their music not their drug habit (that always came later). now it seems even the drug habits are manufactured as publicity stunts. i’m a chid of the 70’s (well, i was born in the 70’s..that counts right?) and a big fan of prog rock. but overall it’s just funny as hell. i checked out the other films on their website. love the pebbles and bambam comment (but dude get a new wig!!) thanks for turning me on to this

  384. Yura on June 6th, 2008 2:41 pm

The ironies, eh? The film was made after all… but you’re right about Lucas and Spielberg not quite being able to pull it off: it’s decent, but is it decent enough to justify tampering with our beloved memories of the three earlier films? I do not know…

  385. The Angry Princess on June 7th, 2008 12:55 am

awww no bad emails!! I can’t get into my email today for some reason it’s pissing me off

  387. James DeFeo on June 7th, 2008 12:40 pm

I wouldn’t even call the Crystal Skull decent. It was horrible. Go read my review and you’ll see. Everyone I know, except one person, thought the movie was shit. Even the average film-goer – all the people I work with – thought it was garbage. GIve it time. The people who are convincing themselves that there was something good in it will eventually call it for what it is like they are now doing for The Phantom Menace. I remember when the Phantom Menace came out there were people trying to defend it. They all know better now.

  388. The Angry Princess on June 18th, 2008 11:29 am

You should rent the original Funny Games from 1997 (yes this is a remake. However, it is by the same director for an American audience.) Netflix it and let us know which one you like better.

  395. doug on July 9th, 2008 9:17 am

    Welcome aboard, nice review!
This is a great movie that I found a few years ago too. The first half of the movie tricks you into thinking it will be pretty dumb. The musical numbers *almost* made me shut it off. But by the time the mystery is solved and the ending hits, its a doozy. By the way, in the UK, Wicker Man is seen in a similar light as Deliverance is. When you mention the film by name , people shudder. Plus a few music groups like Doves, St Etienne and Sneaker Pimps among others have recorded the “Please Come” and other songs as well from the soundtrack. It’s got quite the cult following around the world.

  396. James DeFeo on July 9th, 2008 9:34 am

I’m going to have to netflix this. The only Wicker Man I was aware of was the Nicholas Cage one.

  397. Doug on July 9th, 2008 8:51 pm

Really James? Oh my… The remake is not nearly as good. Tho its worth watching for the camp value…

Mmmmm…….not bad. I’ll always have some affection for his portrayal of leatherface but the original 1974 film will always be my personal favourite-hard to believe it is the same Tobe Hooper who done both. Some interesting answers he came up with. If there is an afterlife Bill then bring Bubba to me thanks-sure it’ll be a fun trip!

    Batman Begins is the WORST?

Puh-leeze. Batman and Robin is the worst. But I’m sure Mr. Reed enjoyed the idea of nipples on the batsuit.

“I don’t have kids, but I had kids, I’d want black kids. So I could take them to see Good Burger.”

“You jerk! Rex Reed is a family friend!”

    Awesome.

The movie’s website http://www.5-25-77.com was updated in November 2007 and includes a 3+ minute trailer. The website looks great and the movie trailer is excellent. I can’t wait to see this movie…when it is finally released. Latest rumor is sometime in Fall 2008.

Remember this is an indie film produced with a very modest budget but I’m amazed at how good the actual production looks…no one running around with hand held camcorders on this one.

Honestly, I have never read a “review” that was so minimalistic and mindless in my entire life. I am to assume that you are steering people away from the fllm, but what have you to back up your strong opinions. I was in the film. My name was Amy Henry at that time, but my last name is now Penney. I had actually read this blurb in the past, but now that I am looking at it again (by pure chance, not because I sought your stereotypically-I-hate-everything-that-I-wish-I-were-but-could-never-be-because-my-parents-did-not-buy-me-an-i pod-for-christmas-let-alone-encourage-me-for-my-self-inflicted-sense-of-entitlement-even-though-I-fail-miserably-at-everything-I-do-and-have-nothing-better-to-do-than-sit-and-play-critic-to-the-artist-I-am-not-going-to-be-no-matter-how-hard-I-try self).
YOU DID NOT EVEN WATCH THE MOVIE!
    May I quote you?
“involved in research of this haunted house.”
    Nope. Way off. Guess again.
Since I was there when we actually filmed it, I can tell you flat-out, “angry whatever-you-say-you-are”, you are wrong.
To remind you of your pathetic “review” (and I will not even mention the high-school-drop-out style of writing), let me quote you once again:

“Do you believe in ghosts? How about if something was cursed would you believe that? If I handed you a rock and said later it was cursed how would you react? Would you laugh? Or would you throw the rock out in fear? It almost all boils down to either being superstitious or not. Return Of The Curse tells the story of a curse that is hitting all of the people that were involved in research of this haunted house.”

I CHALLENGE ANYONE TO WATCH THIS FILM AND PROVIDE TO ME A LOGICAL EXPLANATION AS TO HOW THIS PERTAINS TO THE FILM.

If you handed me a rock, I would probably throw it at your alternative-school’s English teacher.

Obviously, you could not even get your GED?

Think about what you have written.
    Get back to me, Angry-For-Failing-At-Everything.

I have more rocks than you do.
And I am much more intelligent.

  432. R. James Ippoliti on January 26th, 2009 6:19 pm

The director of Return of the Curse is Chris Penney. Amy Henry’s last name now is Penney. Looks like the actress married the director.

I would hope that Amy Penney got out of the acting business. If she can’t take criticism (whether she agrees with it or not, even if she doesn’t get it) she shouldn’t be in the industry.

Get a backbone Amy. If you are bothered by one review on one of the many movie review sites and have to write such a scathing retort you really need to find a new career. You’ll never get anywhere with this attitude.

Next time you don’t agree with something perhaps you should just write “I’m sorry you feel this way.” Now you just look like a mental case and a bitch.

  433. The Angry Princess on January 26th, 2009 6:25 pm

I love Ralph! I never said my reviews were going to break writing standards by any means. Some of my reviews are laid back, others are more serious. It’s been about 3 years now and this is the first letter I have recieved…I think that’s pretty darn good:) It’s all about fun and the love for film. You can’t win them all.

  434. Erik S. on January 26th, 2009 11:46 pm

As an independent filmmaker I have had great reviews, mediocre reviews, and well, got my ass torn out of me too. I’ve had one reviewer say 5 specific things were amazing and another reviewer say 3 of those same things sucked and the 2 others weren’t much better. Film is subjective and if you want reviews then you have to be able to take your lumps. You put yourself out there an hope for the best.

I’ve thanked every reviewer who’s ever reviewed the movie. That’s the good reviewers and the baaaaad reviewers. I’m always happy someone took an hour and half of their life to sit through my film and post something.

Oh and 1 hate letter in 3 years is a pretty good track record I’d think.

That’s my 2 cents for what it’s worth.

  435. Nate on January 27th, 2009 11:37 am

The lady that wrote the review is obviously a dip shit with nothing better to do than criticize an artist who is learning and developing his craft.

Perhaps, no one without millions of dollars and actors like Owen Wilson, Adam Sandler and Ben Stiller should make movies.

And I’ll chime in on her writing skills…Patethic. Grade school dropout.

  436. luluthebrave on January 27th, 2009 11:51 am

It is evident to me that she did not even watch the film, as her review did not accurately describe the film’s premise at all.
That being said, it is much easier to take criticism when it is given from an individual who is well-informed about the topic he/she is criticism.
Actually, I am quite thankful for any review, however, in my years and years in theater, I find that any reputiable reviewer/critic points out those aspects of the piece that were favorable as well as the points that were not so good, not just in the form of “this sucked, don’t waste your time”.
There is a balance when in comes to writing a good review, whether the critic liked it or not.

  437. Nate on January 27th, 2009 12:03 pm

Also-the critic can slam the movie maker but the movie maker can’t critique the critic? Do you honestly think the independent film makers are actually paid? Do they ask to be pubically slammed? No, they just made a movie and put it out there for others to watch if they so desired. If you don’t like it, that’s cool, just change the channel.

  438. The Angry Princess on January 27th, 2009 1:50 pm

    thank you very much eric!

  439. R. James Ippoliti on January 27th, 2009 6:33 pm

Nate, or should I say Chris – you and your wife might as well give it up. She didn’t like your movie. Get over it. Even if you don’t like her writing, why waste your time? It is because nobody cares about the movie and you might as well start up some shit on a movie site to drum up any interest in your film. Focus on people who liked your movie instead of wasting time trying to create a buzz with a negative review.

  440. Amy P on January 27th, 2009 7:26 pm

I know how things go. And I do understand and appreciate the love of film. But deleting the previous message I had posted in response to the comments re: my review of your review seems a little ‘off’..

I respect an honest review. And I do appreciate anyone who does take the time to watch our films, however, you did imply in your initial review that you did not want to watch it; that you had to watch it, which leads me to believe that you were not giving it your full attention.
I am not saying that would change your opinion of the film, nor do I expect , want or ask you to. Everyone is entitled to an opinion. But in fthe future, for fairness to others who may be reading your reviews, please just get the basic outline of the story correct.

    And the question remains:
How can you give an honest review of something that you have not watched ‘enough’ to even explain what the movie is really about? No one here even took the time to see beyond what I had written to get to the point, as I had done with what you had written.

Yes, I did write a scathing review on your review, only because I do not agree with the manner under which your opinion was conveyed.
As I had stated before, from my years of experience in the theater, any reputible critic gives actual reasons as to how their opinion was formulated, weighs out the good with the bad and makes an educated review for the community to be able to decide for themselves.
Your disclaimer about not ever claiming that your writing style was perfect, in so many words, leads me to believe that may have hit a nerve of some sort, as well as the fact that now, I am being silenced from any more postings on this site.
Why is it that critics are able to bash the filmmakers, but the filmmakers are not able to bash the critics in return?
Kind of a double standard, if you ask me.
    Seems like censorship, as well.

    On another note:
One scathing letter in three years is, in fact, impressive. And I am not being a bitch when I say that, and I will, in all fairness, read what other films you have seen and remain objective about what you have written.
I have also read the responses to my posting, which, I will admit was over-the-top, and there were some very valid comments within them that I will take with me in a positive way.
Eric- thank you for your posting in particular. It was very helpful to me. I do notice that you had mentioned that some reviewers did say positive things about your films, though others thought, and stated differently.
That is the point I am trying to make.
We, as humans (for whatever reason) always focus on the negative, and whatever positive aspects we may find are smothered by the negativity.
Yes, it is true; perhaps I do need thicker skin. Perhaps I am frustrated because, as I am certian most, if not all, independent filmmakers are, with the fact that the big film companies churn out crap upon crap with millions of dollars for a budget, yet the whole world shows up because Adam Sandler is in it. Pehaps I am angry because, these days, the term ‘independent film’ does not translate to mean the truly independent filmmakers (and I am speaking for all in this category) who are creating films with money that is left over after the bills are paid, gas is in the car, etc., with no funding from the ‘artistic’ community that only funds artists’ shows who are actually, not local. And then the local filmmakers have to beg just just get a ‘blurb’ put in some tiny corner of a local paper
Or perhaps I was just being a bitch about it all, and I took it out on you and your forum.
Maybe it’s a combination of them all.

I guess I should not go off like that to people who have actually seen the film, because most haven’t, nor will they, in reality.
This whole film thing is pretty new to me, and it sucks to never hear a positive note for what one creates. I suppose that expecting all the efforts put forth into creating a film could yield a kernel of positivity is something I should hope for, instead, and be grateful that we finished the film in the first place.

Anyway, that’s all I have to say.

  441. R. James Ippoliti on January 27th, 2009 7:34 pm

I’m not sure what posting you are talking about that was deleted. There is a delay between a posting and it showing up onto the site because they need to be approved. This is not because of censorship – it is to prevent spam which the site gets every day, just spam links by automated spammers.

I am not aware of any posting you put up that was deleted.

  442. The Angry Princess on January 27th, 2009 10:59 pm

Here’s what I will do I will watch it again- EVEN though I already sat thru it. I will then see if or why I thought it had to do with what I wrote. I’ll admit it was a little harsh but I see countless screeners and I don’t care if your best unexperience buddy is standing there filming the scenes, if I find it interesting and I like it …that’s what I say- and vice versa.

  443. Erik S. on January 27th, 2009 11:14 pm

Ok, you already have my thoughts on the whole review thing. I did want to comment on the end of Amy’s last post.

Making what I call “ultra low budget” films is a frustrating, brutal, painstaking and at times a very unrewarding son-of-a-bitch. You are 100% right that you don’t get the attention other artist might. You are also right that the phrase “independent film” is far too broad and completely ridiculous when someone who makes a film for less than a new VW is technically in the same category as with say the movie Garden State which is also an “independent film”. Getting a film of this nature out there is not easy and getting people to hear about it is even harder. As I said before, I have gotten reviews that completely contradicted other reviews. Does that suck? Yes. That’s film and that’s art. People paid money to go see Beverly Hills Chihuahua…figure that one out.

My first review completely cut us off at the knees. I thought it was unfair, wrong, some parts made no sense and I wondered if he watched the whole movie as well. I thanked him for it. He emailed a nice email back and I’ll be sending him the next movie. The point being, take it in stride, brush yourself off, and move on to the next review, to the next myspace friend request, to the next festival submission. Whatever you do keep moving forward and don’t make enemies along the way. The person that hated this film might love the next one. If you burn the bridge you’ll never know. Besides, your film might suck. My film might suck. I like my film. For our budget I think we did a hell of a job and that is all that matters. As with all art you shouldn’t be doing it for anyone else. People ask for advice and I tell them that it’s good to be smart and make something marketable but more importantly you need to make something YOU like and that YOU are proud of.

Independent film is tough. Do it because you love it.

Angry Princess, pass this movie to me when you are finished with it, I’d like to see it and write something for it too. I might like it, who knows.

  445. Amy P on January 28th, 2009 1:51 am

With the kindest of regards, I ask you to stay true to your review, as that is what you had deemed true to your opinion during the time that you had viewed it.
My response was angry- and I had, perhaps, taken your tag-name, ” Angry Princess” out of context, as I had read your review.
As of one hour ago, and I have the printed screen to show for it- (maybe there is a time-lag, I do understand) my posting was not there, though there was a very quick response from others to explain the delay, though I am sure that it is due to the information being sent in the e-format.
Let’s start over, if you would be so kind. (not being bitchy here, either, just to be clear)
    Fact: we all love films
Fact: I was way too, shall we say, bitchy, with my response.
Fact: There are a ton of films out there, and ours is just one-in-a-gazzilion.
Fact: We are lucky to have you watch the film.
Fact: We need all the support, be it negaitve of positive, to enforse the fact that people are viewing the film.
Fact: I am sorry for beng a bitch. Honestly, that is the first (and last ) time I will ever lash out in that manner; I had been thinking about it all day, and tht is totaly not in my *normal* way of dealing with things.
    Can we start over?

  446. Amy P on January 28th, 2009 1:57 am

Thank you, all, for setting me straight on all of this.
Please, do not send me into the abyss of jack-asses.
I am finding, through this forum, that there is understanding within the chaos.
It was my mistake to take it where I had taken it.

May I please continue with this forum?

  447. Amy P on January 28th, 2009 2:30 pm

Thanks, guys, for weeding through all my crap here. This is a cool forum, and I’d like to stick around if you’ll allow me to. I am sure I can learn a thing or two about this whole business.

    thanks!

    Hey, Angry Princess,
You’ve got a great myspace page. Looks like you are an animal lover just like Chris and I are. I’m really not good at the myspace thing; I have an account, but it’s just pathetic. How in the world did you do that? Any pointers on how to get it ‘out there’?

By the way- my husband and i are truly impressed with your work.

Billions of people have been indoctrinated with their particular brand of religeon together with methods to appease their god in the hope of eternal salvation. If it were to be proved today, beyond a shadow of doubt that no such god(s) existed, would it make any difference.
It has been suggested that if there were no god then man would need to invent one, also that our brain is “hot wired ” to have a god.

So if present gods were proved to be non existant, then man would promptly invent new ones.

  465. R. James Ippoliti on March 28th, 2009 4:04 pm

wasn’t the ending set up? Subtly? The people were good people in the store before their characters changed and fear overtook them. What resulted was a sacrifice of an innocent man to a giant ladybug. Was this not out of character and unexpected? Was this not foreshadowing the ending?

Fear destroys every aspect of ones character if allowed to take over. Even King mentioned that was the point of the story.

  481. Angela on August 4th, 2009 12:54 pm

Thanks for the review but why do you writers continue to disparage BRC referring to him as a one-hit wonder? While nothing has reached the sales volumes of ABH, he has charted many times over the years. He also had a very successful run with his TV series DOC . And in case you weren’t aware, that’s where Miley got her acting start when she wasn’t much more than 2 feet high.

  482. James Ippoliti on August 4th, 2009 1:05 pm

Angela, did you play some part in the making of this movie? I’m curious since you thank us for the review?

It probably isn’t fair, but BRC will most likely always be known for ABH – a song which I think is not only terrible but a joke. That’s sad because I’m sure he has much better songs to offer the world but I don’t think the world will ever let him live down ABH – especially when he has a cash cow with his daughter.

I’ll have to check out this movie and give you my 2 cents.

  483. James Ippoliti on August 9th, 2009 3:22 pm

Kristin, I just watched this short and I agree. This film is just fantastic. The child actors did a very good job and the “less is more” approach to this horror film made it truly terrifying. The use of darkness and lights going out to show the evil was a great idea. It is far scarier not knowing what is killing everyone than if they were to show us. I want to get these guys on our show.

i am searching for old movie monster photos from the 1950’s and 1960’s. I saw some prehistoric monsters eating grass in a field as i was hiking on a country road near a old cemetary. I was scared at first. then i was very brave.

I remember this book too! I stumbled on this site because I’m trying to find another monster-related Scholastic book. Sadly, I can’t remember the title, but it was paper back, had a red cover with black silhouettes of famous movie monsters. If I remember correctly, there was something like a chemistry set or test tubes on the front, a reference from either Frankenstein or Jekyll & Hyde. Does it ring a bell with anyone?

I agree with much of what you wrote. Columbus is definitely a Michael Cera clone but less annoying and with slightly bigger balls. Cameo in the middle was definitely the highlight in the film and I’m very glad to not have seen a cast list before viewing. Zombieland provided one of the most fun theater experiences I’ve had in a while (District 9 did a great job of accomplishing this as well) and the audience was laughing so hard at times that you couldn’t clearly hear some of the punchlines.
