Movie Review: The Creek

Earlier this month I caught the Pennsylvania premiere of Annubis Productions, “The Creek” at the amazing Allen Theatre in Annville, PA. I could feel the excitement in the sold out theatre – genuine excitement from a genuine independent film premiere. “The Creek” is a testament to filmmaking guerilla style. In a world oversaturated with homemade YouTube films and Internet “filmmakers” it is refreshing to see a true independent feature film make it to the big screen. Director Erik Soulliard knows how to entertain an audience.

The Plot of “The Creek.”

On the fifth anniversary of the death of their friend Billy, six friends are forced back together by his ghost. Billy’s death was officially considered an accident but old suspicions and conflicts return. When people start dying they all must ask themselves if it’s his ghost, one of them, or because they returned to The Creek?

“The Creek” introduces us to a cast of characters all brought back together by the ghost of Billy. It isn’t long before we are taken into the very dark and eerie woods of Central Pennsylvania where the film grabs a hold of the viewer and takes them terrifying journey through the woods and through the dark and disturbing psychology of the group.

Kathryn Merry shines as Angel in this film. With her wide range of acting ability, she easily keeps the audience captivated through the horrifying events that face her character in “The Creek.” Kathryn Merry is an actress who no doubt will reach great heights in her profession.

Director Erik Soulliard, who also stars in the film, delivers the funniest line in the film, which had the entire audience laughing hysterically. His delivery was perfect and I think I might steal the line to use in my own life. I won’t spoil the line but it involves beer and a bitchy girl.

The film breaks one of the Low Budget Filmmaking Laws and that is shooting outdoors at night. It’s difficult to do on a low budget but the beautiful cinematography by Jason Contino puts the film another notch above other low budget indies. Fans of Jason’s work will find a treat in “The Creek” – clips from his short film “Midnight Sun.”

You can see “The Creek” this April at the Pioneer Theater in NYC. (Info below.) I hope you go out and support independent filmmaking.

The Creek premieres in New York City at the Pioneer Theater on Monday April 30th, 2007 at 7:00 pm!
