Drive-by Reviews: May 30, 2009

National Lampoon’s Bagboy (2006): To gain the respect of his hometown and win the heart of his dream girl, grocery store clerk Phil (Paul Campbell) starts training for the international competitive bagging championships, one of the most prestigious events in the supermarket world. A thoroughly entertaining sports comedy of a different stripe, the film also stars Brooke Shields, Dennis Farina, Larry Miller, Robert Hoffman and Marika Dominczyk.
Drive-by Review: I was really bored so I decided to check out this film. It’s not half bad. It doesn’t have the exploitive sex you would expect from a National Lampoon production but it has heart. This movie took an absurd concept and made it work. Bagboy is not a great film but it is written well enough to keep your interest throughout the flick.
Crashing (2007): Richard McMurray’s (Campbell Scott) first novel made him a star, complete with a beach house, a beautiful wife — and a bad case of writer’s block. But when his wife kicks him out, McMurray crashes with two students, who serve as the inspiration for his next book. The cramped apartment soon becomes filled with romantic tension and literary ambition, as Jacqueline (Lizzy Caplan) and Kristen (Izabella Miko) start to pen their own stories.
Drive-by Review: This movie made me hate intellectual literarily types. The lead actor is a second rate Kevin Kline / Tim Robbins. There are no surprises and is once cliche after another. HOLY VOICE OVER. The movie is almost told entirely through the thoughts of the main character. By the time you get to the ending, where they try to be clever with a few alternate endings and then landing on a twist ending, you just don’t care. This movie is a complete waste of time.
Yes Man (2008): Based on the comedic memoir by Danny Wallace, this film stars Jim Carrey as Carl, a man who, as an antidote to unhappiness, resolves to say “yes” to everything that comes his way. Initially, Carl’s new practice proves successful in lifting his spirits, but soon he is confronted with unexpected and seemingly unbeatable challenges stemming from his unique self-imposed regime. Zooey Deschanel co-stars as Allison, Carl’s love interest.
Drive-by Review: Maybe it is just me and my longing for love or maybe I just needed to laugh, but I enjoyed Yes Man. I didn’t expect to find myself getting through another bad Jim Carrey movie. I will say that Carrey was the weakest part of the film. He phones in his performance and throws in some signature Jim Carrey faces that just feel uncomfortable in this movie. On the other hand, I fell in love with Zooey Deschanel’s character, Carrey’s love interest, and stayed for her. Terrance Stamp was a nice addition to the film.
Star Trek (2009): Capt. Kirk (Chris Pine) and his trusted team on the starship USS Enterprise boldly go where no man has gone before in this installment of Gene Roddenberry’s sci-fi franchise that follows the early days of the intergalactic adventurers. The crew includes Spock (Zachary Quinto), Chekov (Anton Yelchin), Uhura (Zoe Saldana), Scotty (Simon Pegg) and Sulu (John Cho). Eric Bana co-stars, and Leonard Nimoy appears as an older version of Spock.
Drive-by Review: I have talked about this already on the radio show but thought I’d do a drive-by to get more people to check it out. The cast is superb in this new beginning to the classic series. This film is enjoyable. Go see it.
My Name Is Bruce (2006): Mistaken for the character he plays in the Evil Dead films, B-movie icon Bruce Campbell (playing himself) is kidnapped by the citizens of a small mining town who want him to save them from a vengeful demon. At first, Campbell thinks it’s all part of an elaborate prank. But when he realizes the demon is in fact real, he comes face to face with a second terrifying enemy — his own fear. Ted Raimi co-stars in this tongue-in-cheek comedy.
Drive-by Review: This movie had one genuine chuckle. The rest of the film is completely forgettable. Don’t waste your time.
Killing Ariel on DVD June 16th
May 30, 2009
Rick is your all around good guy. He goes to his boss’s party and resists the advances of all the beautiful women, and this is the swinging 70’s and his boss even offers him his beautiful wife. He goes home to loving wife and deals with the kids and there misgivings then hops into bed. While he is sleeping a demon sexually attacks him and now he is completely under her spell.
He suddenly has like a midlife crisis and buys a sports car and takes a girl he met named Ariel to his childhood home which he tells his wife is is getting it ready to sell. Really weird things start happening and he keeps having strange nightmares and visions that are causing him to act out making Ariel think he is a complete wacko. He’ll be lying in the bed with her and he’ll glance over and it will be some other woman or even his wife.
Ariel tells him he is just dealing with a guilty conscious and brings him back to bed for another exhausting romp that leaves him drained. He makes his way up to the attic and finds his father’s journal. Reading it he becomes convinced that Ariel is the demon that once took hold of his mother. He hears something and turns around to see the naked man that he remember seeing his mother with as a child and just knows he is evil.
Killing Ariel was confusing and if I didn’t have a synopsis for it I don’t know what I would of thought it was about. That doesn’t mean it was bad, I actually really liked it. The best parts were when he was piecing everything together and one scene imparticular scene with a disembodied head that he brings home with him. Can Rick get his head together and rid himself of the evil clinging demon?

This time there are bigger and badder fish to fry and at times you wonder if Logan will be able to continue his mission. Brian Easton is a master storyteller who makes you feel like you are right there within the addictive storyline. The details this man puts into this story is amazing and if Hollywood needs a new inspiration I think we have found it!
Gemini Rising Episode 7 Part 1
May 26, 2009
There is so much to love in episode 7 of the kick ass web series Gemini Rising (www.geminirising.tv). Let me start off by giving mad props to Gregory Nassif St. John for his portrayal of Larry LaMay, a character based off of Al Alberts, a Philadelphia area host of The Al Alberts Showcase, a Saturday afternoon talent show. Gregory’s attention to detail in molding this character is simply genius. I would tune in religiously if Fugue Films ever did a Larry LaMay Spin-off. But let’s not forget Larry’s Piano player, played by Marty Kris, whose comedic timing with Larry just makes it all the more believable. I honestly feel like these guys have worked together on the LaMay show for years. With every viewing of episode 7 I notice little things that Gregory does with the LaMay character that has me in stitches. From his subtle adjustment of his seated posture while watching a very awkward teen dance, which appears to be highly arousing for Larry to the way he holds the microphone. It captures all the creepiness that was The Al Alberts showcase.
Now throw in an early Sunday morning performance of a prog rock band on the Larry LaMay show and you have a recipe for greatness. Righteous Jolly as Robert never disappoints. His passion for the music and frustration with the world around him draws you in. You want so badly for something to work out in Robert’s world.
Being in many bands for many years, it pleases me to see that Fugue Films manages to capture what it is like to be in a rock band and all the shit you end up dealing with. At one point our band got booked at a comedy cabaret. We had comedians open up for us. We were so out of place and it was an awful night. So I feel Gemini Rising’s pain.
Gemini Rising hit its stride in episode 7. The art direction, costuming, sound and writing is top notch.
Now that would be more than enough for a little-indie-that-could web series to win me over but the Fugue Films crew goes one step further and wrote and recorded the song “Electric Lady of the Lake” featured in the episode. A powerful and epic song, it is a testament to the amazing lengths Fugue Films along with their musical collaborators go to to bring to their audience a well rounded vision. The song’s dark tone also feels like a bit of foreshadowing of darker things to come for Robert and his clan. Episode 7 is a masterpiece and proof that great art is in the hands of the indies.
In a sea of internet video mediocrity, this series rises above them all and should be a lesson to other indie filmmakers to take the time and make your films the best they can be. You don’t have to take my word for it. Gemini Rising recently earned a 2009 Webby Award Honoree and was recently mentioned in a Washington Post article comparing it to an HBO production “Flight of the Conchords.”
This series ROCKS!

Drive-by Reviews

Drive-by reviews because I’m too lazy to write anything more.
Bullitt (1968): Steve McQueen is the prototype for every movie cop who refuses to play by the book. Frank Bullitt (McQueen) must baby-sit a gangster for 48 hours. When hit men snuff the witness, Bullitt won’t be stopped in his quest for vengeance. Bullitt earned immortality for a 100-mph car-chase sequence as two automobiles bottom out their shock absorbers roaring through San Francisco’s hills.
Drive-by Review: Steve McQueen, High speed car chase with a 1968 Mustang Fastback and a Dodge Charger – unless you are a Sex & The City watching pussy you’ll totally dig this flick.
Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired (2008): Director Roman Polanski is the focus of this documentary that explores the tumultuous events of his personal life, including the murder of his pregnant wife, Sharon Tate, and the sex scandal that prompted him to flee the United States for France. Interviews with Polanski’s victim, Samantha Geimer, Chinatown screenwriter Robert Towne, actress Mia Farrow and others help to reveal the many sides of this controversial figure.
Drive-by Review: An in-depth look at Polanski’s dark side while briefly touching on his amazing contribution to the film world. I would have liked to see a more balanced documentary on Polanski being a huge fan of his films.
Private School (1983): At the uppity Cherryvale Academy for Women, Christine Ramsay (Phoebe Cates) and her archrival, Jordan Leigh-Jenson (Betsy Russell), set their sights on the same clueless hunk (Matthew Modine), a student at nearby Freemount Academy for Men. Comedy reigns supreme as the two babes wrangle over their man. Meanwhile, a trio of academy boys, desperate for a glimpse of female flesh, will stop at nothing to catch the Cherryvale girls in the buff.
Drive-by Review: Tits, tits and more TITS. This movie does teen sex comedies right. Horny guys doing whatever they can to see tits and this film does not disappoint. Phobe Cates is adorable and a young Matthew Modine is her love interest. This movie was something I just revisited. Kids today don’t know what trouble a young teen had to go through in the early 80s to see tits. They are spoiled with their interwebs. Today’s teen sex comedies can learn a lot from Private School.
Never Back Down (2008): When a quick-tempered teenager (Sean Faris) moves to a new town and faces the challenges of attending a new high school, he seeks solace in an underground fight club, where he’s taken under the wing of a mixed martial arts expert. Employing nonstop tension, inspiring training sequences, gripping fight scenes and a pulsing soundtrack, this film will amp up martial arts practitioners and enthusiasts alike.
Drive-by Review: I got through 15 minutes of this movie, which I watched based on a bad recommendation. I can’t give it a real review since I had to turn it off. This movie is GAY! Instead watch ENTER THE DRAGON.
Cashback (2006): After his girlfriend dumps him, insomniac art student Ben (Sean Biggerstaff) takes a supermarket night-shift job and deals with his boredom by pretending he can stop time — a tactic that reveals life’s hidden beauty and draws him to the intriguing checkout girl (Emilia Fox). Surrounded by equally creative co-workers, Ben learns that by freezing time, his world opens up to unimaginable possibilities, including a cure for his chronic sleeplessness.
Drive-by Review: Great concept (obviously stolen from the novel The Fermata) but the film was poorly executed. It couldn’t decide between art film or bad Kevin Smith rip-off. One good tits-o-rama scene that made the film passable.
Welcome to the Dollhouse (1995): The horrors of junior high are vividly re-created in this darkly comic tale of painfully awkward Dawn Wiener (Heather Matarazzo), who must cope with a dreary, middle-child home life as well as with classmates who mercilessly taunt her. Writer-director Todd Solondz’s unflinching look at the nightmare that is early adolescence took away prizes at both the Sundance Film Festival and the Independent Spirit Awards.
Drive-by Review: Highly recommended. This is probably the best made movie about adolescence. Also this is during the last great indie film revolution. Hasn’t been one since – let’s get to work indies!!!
It’s a Boy Girl Thing (2006): A visit to a natural history museum proves catastrophic for high school rivals Nell (Samaire Armstrong), the overachiever, and Woody (Kevin Zegers), the jock, when an ancient Aztec statue casts a spell that causes them to switch bodies. Now, the pair is forced to experience life from a different perspective and see exactly what it’s like to walk in the other’s shoes. Sharon Osbourne co-stars in this charming comedy from director Nick Hurran.
Drive-by Review: Romantic / Teen Comedies are a guilty pleasure of mine. Add to it the sub-genre of body swapping and I’m sold. I really enjoyed this well acted film. The script wasn’t half bad either. It’s a fun little movie and you could do a lot worse – like ADVENTURELAND.
Dan in Real Life (2007): Advice columnist and widowed father of three Dan Burns (Steve Carell) has met someone new. Marie (Juliette Binoche) is beautiful, she’s smart — and she just so happens to be the girlfriend of Dan’s brother Mitch (Dane Cook). With a publicly recognized moral compass, Dan finds himself torn between reaching for happiness and keeping the peace in his family. Dianne Wiest and John Mahoney co-star in this romantic comedy from director Peter Hedges.
Drive-by Review: GOD! I HATED THIS MOVIE. Could that family be any more annoying? I was hoping for one of them to be a killer and start picking off people in the family. What a contrived piece of shit this film was. People who like this movie are the same people that are in the audiences during those late night infomercials.
Some info on Rough Cut the movie!
May 18, 2009
I am waiting for my screener as I type up this! Rough Cut the movie is about the murder of Randi Trimble.
Film synopsis:
Would you kill to make a movie? The scary thing is, two independent filmmakers did.
In January 2003 a woman was found beaten, strangled, and stabbed in her Pennsylvania home. 8 months earlier, an independent horror film was shot on the nearby Appalachian Trail.
Rough Cut is a feature length documentary that explores the twisted true tale of two first-time filmmakers who had a dream of making a horror movie and the bizarre events that followed.
At 8:29 p.m. on January 10, 2003 police in Camp Hill, PA received a frantic 911 call from Brian Trimble. He had just returned home from dinner with a friend and found his wife, Randi, in a pool of blood on the garage floor.
Before the brutal murder occurred, the house looked as though it was burglarized. Suspicions immediately arose in the seasoned detectives investigating the case. Evidence pointed towards the husband, but his alibi was airtight.
For the next 9 months detectives and law enforcement officials used every tool at their disposal to solve this truly bizarre crime.

NJ MALE Actor Needed ASAP!
May 16, 2009
looking for a local New Jersey guy in his early 20s to play the title role in one of the stories for my new cable access show.
The story is “The Incredible Bleeding Man” (a comedy) and the person will have to be OK with being covered in fake blood.
The guy should be an eccentric nutcase. Funny with a personality. UNCONVENTIONAL looking in any way might help. Around 6 feet tall and skinny and able to look insane and like a total mess, yet not intimidating. Maybe a WANNA-BE rock star type, but young enough to still be a bit naive/innocent and unaware what is going on around him. The role requires somebody who has a SPARK in his personality more than being a serious actor. He should have presence.
I am hoping that a singer in a rock band might have a weird funny nephew for the role. Somebody from an eccentric family!
There is no pay as cable access is free, but it will be shown all over NJ and in New York City. Copy will be provided.
Please email here if you are interested and fit the role:

RetarDEAD- DVD out June 2nd!
May 16, 2009
RetarDEAD is the follow up to the cult classic movie Monsturd from 4321 films. I didn’t have the pleasure of viewing that one but now I am definitely interested. Here at Butte County Institute of Special Education things are about to get shook up a little bit and everyday routine will be a thing of the past. When you see these sorry excuses for people you just think to yourself, “I know your mommy always told you that you were special but she lied!”
Evil Doctor Stern who created the poop man from the last film is now working on another demented side project that involves injecting the Special Ed students with Algernon 9, it’s a project that will make these feeble minded beings into a freakin genius or hyper intelligent. The only problem is there are some serious side effects like brain swelling, cardiac arrest, tumors, cannibilism- they become zombies!
So now Butte County has the locked up zombies escape and people are becoming infected everywhere and the police are trying to stop the madness. To make matters even worse there is a pervert on the loose you know a real weenie wager who they are calling the masturbator since that is exactly what he is doing while spying on people. Can they catch this perp and stop the zombies as well?
RetarDEAD is not a serious movie at all, you will not be scared by it but you might bust your gut laughing at it! Heidi Martinuzzi from www.pretty-scary.net makes as cameo as the cowgirl zombie while my boss at www.thechainsawmafia.com Shannon Lark is a living dead girl. It was fun to sit and watch this and see the girls and the movie will certainly become another classic in the horror community!
3 outta 5 slashes!
