NORRISTOWN ARTS ORGANIZATION LAUNCHES FILM CAREERS GLOBALLY
Films Being Produced for 3 weeks between July-August

Philadelphia, PA, July 9, 2010 – Project Twenty1, a-Norristown-based nonprofit  organization dedicated to inspiring, connecting, exhibiting, and promoting artists, will spark the creation of over 40 short films and animations for the fifth year in a row, at their annual “Launch Event”. The event serves as the largest free film networking event in Philadelphia and will take place on Saturday, July 31 2010 starting at 3 pm at North Bowl Lounge & Lanes, 909 North Second Street in Northern Liberties.

For 3 weeks (July 31-August 21), Teams of local animators and filmmakers, in addition to international Teams from Hong Kong, Canada, and the UK, will create films up to ten minutes in length based on this year’s secret element which Project Twenty1 will reveal at 7 p.m. The networking event is targeted towards Philadelphia’s creative community, as local film productions often lead to a high demand for crew and talent. In the words of Project Twenty1 Artistic Director Matt Conant, “This is a great way for artists of all disciplines to get their foot in the door on a production happening in their back yard.”

All films completed within the guidelines of the Competition will screen at the International House Philadelphia as a part of the Project Twenty1 Film & Animation Festival, October 1-3. The films will compete for awards, prizes, DVD and digital distribution, and a national festival tour. According to Executive Producer Stephanie Yuhas, “These are not run-of-mill indie film productions that sit on a shelf after completion. We submit films all over the world to get our artists as much exposure as possible.”

“I participate every year,” says Team Drop the HAT leader Jason Heffner of Hatfield, PA, “It’s the best thing I could have ever done for my film career.”

GROUNDBREAKING FEATURE DOCUMENTARY “THE PEOPLE vs. GEORGE LUCAS” IN SESSION AT SXSW FILM FESTIVAL

February 4, 2010

DENVER, CO. February 4, 2010—–THE PEOPLE vs. GEORGE LUCAS has been selected for the prestigious Spotlight Premiere section at the South By Southwest (SXSW) Film Festival in Austin, Texas, which runs from March 12th to 21st 2010.

“The team is ecstatic to be screening at SXSW for the film’s world premiere,” says Director Alexandre O. Philippe, “it’s the ideal platform for our launch, as the festival brings together indie films, music and interactive in a unique way that very much reflects the participatory nature of our doc.”

THE PEOPLE vs. GEORGE LUCAS explores the titanic struggle between a Godlike filmmaker and his legions of fans over the most popular franchise in movie history. “At its core, PvsG is the examination of a high-profile, dysfunctional love story”, says Philippe. “George created this humongous and intricate sandbox for us to play in; but is he the sole owner of it, or does it now belong to the ages? And what happens to your role as a creator when your audience claims it owns your art? We basically looked at the conflicted dynamic between George and his fans from a cultural perspective, and asked ourselves those questions.”

Listen to This Is Some Scene’s Interviews
with the creators of The People Vs. George Lucas:

Interview 1, Mar 2008 – Click here to listen.

Interview 2, Jan 2009 – Click here to listen.

The documentary features key testimonies from the likes of Gary Kurtz (Producer of AMERICAN GRAFFITI, STAR WARS and THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK), Neil Gaiman (THE SANDMAN, AMERICAN GODS), Dave Prowse (aka Darth Vader), Anthony Waye (Executive Producer of the BOND franchise), and Dale Pollock (George Lucas’s Biographer, Author of SKYWALKING).

THE PEOPLE vs. GEORGE LUCAS inventively combines these exclusive interviews with fan footage from around the globe, and impassioned testimonies from George’s staunchest fans and foes. “Making this film was a huge investigative challenge, considering how many people were afraid to talk to us. George is a very powerful man. But we stuck to our guns and dug deep to deliver a completely uncensored, no-holds-barred factual account, and, ultimately, what we hope will be recognized as a loving tribute,” says DoP Robert Muratore.

“The obstacles we faced made us really think about the rapidly changing filmmaking landscape, and so we used digital technology to facilitate an open call for contributions – allowing us to make a fully participatory documentary”, says Producer Anna Higgs, known for cross-platform work in the UK and Europe. “In many ways, it’s a tribute to the YouTube generation, which Lucas’s advances in technology helped create,” points out Producer Kerry Roy; “fundamentally, it’s about how new media interacts with old media, as well as ownership and copyright in the digital age; and it was our intent from day one to give the fans a prevailing voice in the doc.”

The crew worked relentlessly for two and a half years to produce the most accurate, thorough, and impartial deconstruction of an entire generation’s love-hate for the man (admittedly) responsible for their childhood’s mythos; and they acknowledge that this project wouldn’t have been possible without the extraordinary support and encouragement from the fans and contributing filmmakers. “63,686 frequent flier miles, 634 hours of footage, 14TB of drive space, 126 interviews, 719 fan submissions, thousands of fan emails, and only three death threats. The positives outweigh the negatives, I suppose,” jests Producer Vanessa Philippe.

“We were driven by our own admiration for George, profound love of his films, obsession for their significance in popular culture, and opinions about their legacy as cultural milestones,” says Alexandre Philippe.

SXSW 2010 will take place in Austin, Texas, from March 12th – 21st, 2010.

INDIE TENNESSEE FILMMAKER WARMS HEARTS IN PHILADELPHIA

September 22, 2009

Tennessee filmmaker Brook Benjamin’s BOYS OF SUMMERVILLE premieres in Philadelphia for one exclusive screening on October 4 at P21Fest, a celebration of independent film and animation.

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania – September 22, 2009 – The film BOYS OF SUMMERVILLE will receive its Philadelphia Premiere this October as an Official Selection of the 4th annual P21Fest, a celebration of independent film and animation.

BOYS OF SUMMERVILLE, directed by Brooks Benjamin, is a drama about Peter Davis (Casey Payne) who is on his way to his old stomping ground in Summerville to sell his late father’s estate. His plan is simple: Fix up the old house and get back to his life. However, when Peter arrives in town, he finds himself torn between his big city life and small town roots.

The film was shot in Rockwood, Kingston, Knoxville, and Oak Ridge, Tennessee, on a modest production budget of approximately $55,000. Despite the budgetary restraints, the writing, cinematography, and acting is on-par with many larger Hollywood productions.

“The film is funny without being raunchy, dramatic without being cliché, and heartwarming without being cheesy,” says Project Twenty1 Executive Producer, Stephanie Yuhas.

A panel of 21 Volunteer Community Screeners from the Greater Philadelphia Area selected BOYS OF SUMMERVILLE from hundreds of entries in this year’s festival.

“I thought this would be a typical baseball movie,” said Brian Wooden, a Montgomery county Screener, “but it actually had a surprising amount of depth and humor. I am so excited that we have the opportunity to screen it in Philadelphia.”

BOYS OF SUMMERVILLE will screen on October 4th 2009 at 1:30 pm at the International House Philadelphia Theater. Attendance is limited to the first 350 people, so advanced seating is suggested by visiting www.ProjectTwenty1.com.

MICHIGAN FILMMAKERS TAKE PHILADELPHIA BY STORM

September 22, 2009

Michigan filmmaker Michael McCallum received his East Coast Premiere in Philadelphia for his feature drama FAIRVIEW STREET and hopes for future Philadelphia film productions.

Philadelphia, PA – September 24, 2009 – FAIRVIEW STREET has already picked up an award for “Best Feature Film” at the 2009 Muskegon Film Festival and now makes its way to Philadelphia for its East Coast Premiere in the Philadelphia Filmathon portion of P21Fest, a 4-day celebration of independent film and animation.

In addition to writing and directing, the Michigan filmmaker, Michael McCallum, plays the films ex-con leading man, James Winston, who comes home after four years in prison to find that his checkered past has followed him. Already in uncertain and tenuous territory with his young wife (Elizabeth G. Moore), his new life quickly unravels when he becomes the prime suspect in a new murder case.  Hounded by detectives and losing the confidence of his family, James struggles to prove he is a changed man.

“There is a real depth and sympathy to the characters,” says Rudy Flesher, a local Philadelphia writer and film enthusiast. He is one of the multiple dedicated coordinators that helped organize the exclusive screening through Project Twenty1, a volunteer arts organization dedicated to inspiring, promoting, and exhibiting film in Philadelphia. “The elegant black and white cinematography and moving soundtrack has stunned many of our community test audiences and film industry judges.”

“I’m excited that Mr. McCallum and his team are considering shooting their next feature production in Philadelphia,” says Matt Conant, Project Twenty1 Artistic Director. “They are proof that if Pennsylvania upholds its Film Tax Credit, out-of-state independents and studios will flock to the area. And that’s not only good for film, but for the local economy.”

FAIRVIEW STREET will screen on Saturday, October 3 at 7:45 pm at the International House Philadelphia Theater for one night only. The director, as well as much of the cast and crew will be in attendance. Seating is limited to the first 350 people, so advanced seating is suggested by visiting www.ProjectTwenty1.com.

Vampires invade Las Vegas with LIVE EVIL on Oct. 30

August 19, 2009

Las Vegas premiere of horror film will be free event at true grindhouse theater

August 18

Just in time for Halloween, PollyStaffle.com presents the Las Vegas premiere of “Live Evil” with a free screening at the Sci-Fi Center.

The one time only showing of this independent vampire action film, starring Tim Thomerson (“Near Dark,” “Trancers”), Ken Foree (“Dawn of the Dead,” “The Devil’s Rejects”) and Scream Queen Tiffany Shepis (“Chainsaw Cheerleaders,” “Nightmare Man”), will be October 30th at 9 p.m.

The event will also feature giveaways, and Q&A and autograph sessions with the cast and crew.

Directed by Jay Woelfel and produced by Mark Terry, “Live Evil” tells the story of vampires having trouble surviving in a world where the blood supply has become polluted by drugs and STDs.

“I am basically a part time resident of Las Vegas, especially during football season,” Terry said. ” One of my goals was to have a screening here because if there was one city in the world that would ‘get’ this movie it would be Vegas.”

The film gets a limited theatrical run starting September 18 via Monogram Releasing and will play 300 screens. It won’t be seen in Vegas until Oct. 30 and makes it way to DVD and VOD (video on demand) on November 3.

“Live Evil” also stars Lee Perkins (“KatieBird*Certifiable Crazy Person”), Chuck Williams (“Bubba Ho-tep”), filmmakers Jeff Burr (“Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre III”) and Sean Cain (“Silent Night, Zombie Night”), Scream Queen Elissa Dowling (“Amateur Porn Star Killer 3D: Inside the Head”), Porn Star Jenny Hendrix (“Not Three’s Company XXX”) and more.

Fangoria Magazine has called “Live Evil” one of the top three low budget indie films they have caught this year and the St. Petersburg Times has said it is a cut above “the usual splatter flicks.”

Located at the northwest corner of the Commercial Center (right off Sahara on 2520 State State, Las Vegas, NV 89109), the Sci-Fi Center is a comic book and film geek’s paradise. Owned by William Powell, the store houses a true grindhouse movie theater dubbed “The Underground Screening Room” that showcases arthouse, horror, cult, science fiction, fantasy and independent cinema not usually available at traditional theaters in Sin City.
