Drive-by Reviews: May 30, 2009
May 30, 2009
National Lampoon’s Bagboy (2006): To gain the respect of his hometown and win the heart of his dream girl, grocery store clerk Phil (Paul Campbell) starts training for the international competitive bagging championships, one of the most prestigious events in the supermarket world. A thoroughly entertaining sports comedy of a different stripe, the film also stars Brooke Shields, Dennis Farina, Larry Miller, Robert Hoffman and Marika Dominczyk.
Drive-by Review: I was really bored so I decided to check out this film. It’s not half bad. It doesn’t have the exploitive sex you would expect from a National Lampoon production but it has heart. This movie took an absurd concept and made it work. Bagboy is not a great film but it is written well enough to keep your interest throughout the flick.
Crashing (2007): Richard McMurray’s (Campbell Scott) first novel made him a star, complete with a beach house, a beautiful wife — and a bad case of writer’s block. But when his wife kicks him out, McMurray crashes with two students, who serve as the inspiration for his next book. The cramped apartment soon becomes filled with romantic tension and literary ambition, as Jacqueline (Lizzy Caplan) and Kristen (Izabella Miko) start to pen their own stories.
Drive-by Review: This movie made me hate intellectual literarily types. The lead actor is a second rate Kevin Kline / Tim Robbins. There are no surprises and is once cliche after another. HOLY VOICE OVER. The movie is almost told entirely through the thoughts of the main character. By the time you get to the ending, where they try to be clever with a few alternate endings and then landing on a twist ending, you just don’t care. This movie is a complete waste of time.
Yes Man (2008): Based on the comedic memoir by Danny Wallace, this film stars Jim Carrey as Carl, a man who, as an antidote to unhappiness, resolves to say “yes” to everything that comes his way. Initially, Carl’s new practice proves successful in lifting his spirits, but soon he is confronted with unexpected and seemingly unbeatable challenges stemming from his unique self-imposed regime. Zooey Deschanel co-stars as Allison, Carl’s love interest.
Drive-by Review: Maybe it is just me and my longing for love or maybe I just needed to laugh, but I enjoyed Yes Man. I didn’t expect to find myself getting through another bad Jim Carrey movie. I will say that Carrey was the weakest part of the film. He phones in his performance and throws in some signature Jim Carrey faces that just feel uncomfortable in this movie. On the other hand, I fell in love with Zooey Deschanel’s character, Carrey’s love interest, and stayed for her. Terrance Stamp was a nice addition to the film.
Star Trek (2009): Capt. Kirk (Chris Pine) and his trusted team on the starship USS Enterprise boldly go where no man has gone before in this installment of Gene Roddenberry’s sci-fi franchise that follows the early days of the intergalactic adventurers. The crew includes Spock (Zachary Quinto), Chekov (Anton Yelchin), Uhura (Zoe Saldana), Scotty (Simon Pegg) and Sulu (John Cho). Eric Bana co-stars, and Leonard Nimoy appears as an older version of Spock.
Drive-by Review: I have talked about this already on the radio show but thought I’d do a drive-by to get more people to check it out. The cast is superb in this new beginning to the classic series. This film is enjoyable. Go see it.
My Name Is Bruce (2006): Mistaken for the character he plays in the Evil Dead films, B-movie icon Bruce Campbell (playing himself) is kidnapped by the citizens of a small mining town who want him to save them from a vengeful demon. At first, Campbell thinks it’s all part of an elaborate prank. But when he realizes the demon is in fact real, he comes face to face with a second terrifying enemy — his own fear. Ted Raimi co-stars in this tongue-in-cheek comedy.
Drive-by Review: This movie had one genuine chuckle. The rest of the film is completely forgettable. Don’t waste your time.
