Surviving History
June 22, 2008
Each week in the new History series SURVIVING HISTORY, the team of thrill-seeking history buffs experiment with some of history’s most amazing inventions. Master craftsmen from The Scarefactory in Columbus, Ohio survey the past to experience the most inventive devices and technologies ever created. Using a variety of skills (welding, design, carpentry), the multi-talented team rebuilds elements from the past in an effort to better understand history.
Through this process of re-creating and testing ancient inventions, history comes to life and is illuminated anew in an incredibly personal and powerful journey. Ever wonder what it would feel like to be under the blade of the Halifax Gibbet, or inside an Iron Maiden during the Spanish Inquisition? Can you imagine what heretics felt as their bodies were stretched and twisted on the Rack? What would it be like to eat live cockroaches like prisoners in the French penal colonies? In each episode, the team investigates a different period in history, picks out five of the most ingenious devices, practices or weapons of war from that time period, and studies the history of how and why they were developed.
In the series premiere, the Scarefactory’s trek through history guides them to the macabre world of the Middle Ages. Chad explores the heinous mythology of one of the most infamous torture devices ever conceived, the Iron Maiden. Kermit brings his fabricating ingenuity to a lesser-known tool of medieval punishment, the Iron Boot, while Josh breaks away from the group to investigate Ancient China’s early use of gunpowder with Rocket-propelled Fire Arrows.
The people in this show first test these devices on dummies and then on themselves. Watching only two episodes I saw these guys put through some insane tests to demonstrate history. This series is INTENSE.
Joss Whedon’s ‘Dollhouse’
June 7, 2008
Josh Whedon’s return to television gives me goosebumps. The man created the best television in the last decade with Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel and Firefly. The Firefly movie, Serenity is a superb sci-fi movie. Now Joss is back to series television with Dollhouse, which reunites Joss with Eliza Dushku who played the bad girl slayer, Faith on Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Scifi.com recently interviewed Joss on the upcoming series. Read the interview here.
Williams cast in ‘Dollhouse’
April 4, 2008
Olivia Williams (X-Men: The Last Stand) has joined the cast of Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator Joss Whedon’s highly anticipated Fox drama ‘Dollhouse’.
Williams will play the head of the dorm in which the drones are programmed to perform various tasks in the real world. Eliza Dushku will star as Echo, one of the “dolls” who begins to become self-aware.
Also included in Thursday’s casting was Eion Bailey in CBS’ “Can Openers” and Troy Gentile in NBC’s “Zip.” I’m not at all happy about Troy Gentile being cast. He is the very annoying fat kid from Drillbit Taylor. Hopefully his role is minor.
Battlestar’s Beginning of the End – TONIGHT!
April 4, 2008
Battlestar Galactica is back for its final season, tonight, April 4th at 10PM EST. If you would have asked me to support a re-imagining of Battlestar Galactica when this all started, I would have said “No Way!” and told you it was going to fail. I remember people getting up in arms because Starbuck was a *gasp* a woman!
After 3 seasons of what I feel is the best Sci-Fi series on television today and I would put in the top 5 best Sci-Fi series of all time, I consider myself a hardcore Galacticie? I think I just coined a word. Anyway, I am Galactia’s biggest supporter.
Questions will be answered this season, who is a cylon and what is up with Starbuck, once feared dead, and now claiming to have been to Earth and she will lead them back. Is she a ghost, a cylon, Dirk Benedict?
As sad as I will be to see the series go, it has gone as long as it needs to. American television tends to take shows way past their peak and inevitably they “jump the shark.”
But Battlestar isn’t over yet. Fans can look forward to a prequel series called ‘Caprica.’ The Sci Fi Channel will delve into the backstory of “Battlestar Galactica” with this new series that looks at the years leading up to humanity’s devastation by the Cylons.
I feel like I’ve been waiting forever to see this season premiere… WAIT! I have. It’s been a YEAR! Luckily, I got my fix with the RAZOR DVD they put out to appease my Galatica fix.
And I love the female Starbuck. I wouldn’t want it any other way.
Welcome back!
Whedon’s ‘Dollhouse’ gets Galactica co-star
March 28, 2008
Being a hardcore Joss Whedon fan, the news of his new Fox series Dollhouse makes me giddy with anticipation. Buffy the Vampire Slayer was, in my opinion, the BEST show EVER on televison. But don’t take my word for it. Recently, Buffy was ranked #2 in EMPIRE magazine’s 50 Best TV Shows of ALL TIME. The Simpsons took the #1 spot. Buffy was ranked #1 in UGO’s Top 10. The series also made it in TIME Magazine’s 2007 All Time 100 as well as TV Guide’s 2002 Top 50 list.
Firefly is another amazing and perfect Whedon show that I hold dear. Its unfortunate time slot was most likely its downfall but it still is one kick-ass season and the movie, Serenity, is awesome.
Now we have Dollhouse starring Buffy’s Faith, Eliza Dushku. Here is Fox’s description of Dollhouse.
“Echo (Eliza Dushku) [is] a young woman who is literally everybody’s fantasy. She is one of a group of men and women who can be imprinted with personality packages, including memories, skills, language—even muscle memory—for different assignments. The assignments can be romantic, adventurous, outlandish, uplifting, sexual and/or very illegal. When not imprinted with a personality package, Echo and the others are basically mind-wiped, living like children in a futuristic dorm/lab dubbed the Dollhouse, with no memory of their assignments—or of much else. The show revolves around the childlike Echo’s burgeoning self-awareness, and her desire to know who she was before, a desire that begins to seep into her various imprinted personalities and puts her in danger both in the field and in the closely monitored confines of the Dollhouse.”
It sounds a bit confusing but I’m not going to argue with the man who gave me so much to love on Television. The latest Dollhouse news is that Battlestar Galactica co-star Tahmoh Penikett, Fran Kranz (“Welcome to the Captain”), Australian Dichen Lachman and Enver Gjokaj have all been cast in the show.
This Is Some Scene will keep you up-to-date on Dollhouse, so stay tuned. For now, you can read the Hollywood Reporter article below.
“Battlestar Galactica” co-star Tahmoh Penikett, Fran Kranz (“Welcome to the Captain”), Australian Dichen Lachman and Enver Gjokaj have moved into Joss Whedon’s “Dollhouse.”
The four join Eliza Dushku on the 20th Century Fox TV-produced drama, which received a seven-episode order shortly before the strike.
“Dollhouse” revolves around a group of young men and women, aka “Dolls,” who are imprinted with different personalities for different assignments. They have no memories of their previous lives, until Echo (Dushku) begins to try to find out who she was.
Penikett will play Paul Smith, an FBI field agent obsessed with the urban myth of Dollhouse and a twisted romantic foil for Echo.
Kranz will play Topher Brink, a twentysomething genius programmer responsible for imprinting the dolls.
Lachman will play Sierra, a doll like Echo and her friend, who has every personality in the world but her own.
Gjokaj will play Victor, also a doll and a friend of Echo’s, who is childlike when he’s inactive, and everything from Errol Flynn to young DeNiro when he’s active.
Bliss – Season 3
March 10, 2008

Oxygen network is becoming a very popular channel for women besides good old Lifetime with its sappy harlequin book-like happy endings and boring love stories. Right now, Oxygen’s big hit is Bad Girls where a bunch of hotheads move in together while trying not to go to jail for murdering one of their other annoying housemates. Bliss is a close runner up with its seductive fantasies played out before your very own eyes.
I have just finished watching season three of Bliss and it had a little bit of everything in there. I liked the episode where the wife comes home and walks in on her hubby and his dominatrix, which was pretty interesting. Initially I would think that this series is mainly for women but I am sure there’s a guy or two out there that would like it just the same- c’mon who would miss a chance to look at half naked women in steamy scenarios?

Skeptic Eye for the Ghost Hunter Guy
March 5, 2008
9PM EST, Wednesday night, March 5th, the 4th season of Ghost Hunters begins on the Sci-Fi Channel.I have watched almost every paranormal / ghost series on television and hands down, Sci-Fi’s Ghost Hunters is the best. The reasons are simple. With the exception of a few early episodes in season one when they were getting into their groove, they don’t really attribute the hunting to any religion. Sure, sometimes you’ll hear Brian aka “Dude, Run!” call out Jesus’ name in an effort to make the spirit manifest itself (commanding in the power of Jesus has always failed on the show) – overall they don’t attribute any “faith” to the series. Being an agnostic, I appreciate that, unlike the horrible A&E Paranormal State series, which seems to be sponsored by the Catholic Church. Another issue I have with Paranormal State is they go in there assuming it’s not only really haunted, but by some demon, one made up by the producers and attributed to the idiot who runs that ghost hunting group out of Penn State. I’ll go on the record saying Paranormal State is the worst ghost show EVER! And that is why I think Ghost Hunters is so popular, because they try to debunk the haunting, and fortunately / unfortunately they are usually successful. Jason and Grant are great leaders for TAPS and most of the team are tolerable. Ghost Hunters International, well that’s an entirely different animal all together. If they could get the right team for GHI, it could really be a great series as well. Throughout the series some really creepy things have been caught; a chair moving on its own in the lighthouse, strange voices or EVPs caught, and the team chasing shadows that move at an inhuman speed in yet another lighthouse. As much as I love this show, I really want to be on one of these investigations to see first hand if they are up to some trickery. I would love to believe what I’m watching is real but there is this tiny doubt that I think could be quelled if in fact I got onto the show and helped out with an investigation. That is why, following the season premiere Wednesday night, at 10:30PM EST, we will be hosting a special This Is Some Scene at www.BlogTalkRadio.com/ThisIsSomeScene. We will discuss the show and, though I doubt they will, I will invite the Ghost Hunters to call in. And perhaps they will take Doug and myself out on one of their hunting excursions to investigate the paranormal. If they don’t take my challenge, it will still be an entertaining show.
P.S. We need a lot more of Kris on the show. Lots more.
More Knight Rider Please!
February 18, 2008

NBC’s 2 hour Knight Rider movie aired tonight at 9PM (EST). Not sure what to expect, I was pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed the show, the characters and the humor. The new KITT voice isn’t irritating and the banter between the car and the characters was quite humorous.
Mike Traceur a bitter former Army Ranger and failed race car driver, just got a new lease on life, neither he cares for or wants this chance to make up for his past failings. He’s got problems, he’s in debt and people want to kill him. The choice is all too obvious for him and the Knight Industries Three Thousand (K.I.T.T).
The story is typical, some bad organization wants the super high-tech weapons program in order to take over the world and the unwilling hero is plucked from his troubled life to save the day. It works. The Mustang is awesome, though I know a few Pontiac fans who are upset they didn’t bring back the Trans Am. The women are all sexy but I’m especially impressed with Sydney Tamiia Poitier (Death Proof) as the super-hot lesbian FBI Agent. David Hasselholf has a nice cameo, handing the Knight Rider torch over to the new hero, who turns out being Michael Knight’s son.
After viewing the 2 hour movie, I really would like to see them reboot this series. I was a fan as a child and I think I can like it today. Even the updated theme music isn’t all that bad.
